There are indeed no words to describe this beautiful Indian restaurant in Reykjavik. Every aspect of the restaurant was spectacular, and the hospitality of the staff just makes you want to return every time for yet another lip-smacking curry and Naan.Let's start with food. Absolutely flawless food and the chefs prepare every single dish individually, suited to your taste buds. In fact, one of my family members was allergic to any sort of spice, so the chef prepared special dishes to suit our needs, without compromising on taste.Coming to hospitality, every single waiter and waitress were extremely courteous and left no stone unturned in making your experience even more pleasant. Special mention to the owner of the restaurant who herself served us and took care of our needs more than adequately.Last but certainly not least, the decor of this place was fabulous. The art pieces on the wall, the curtains and other elements of interior design really made the patrons get a taste of India. In fact, I haven't seen places in India that have managed to capture such an authentic essence of India.Highly recommend this to anyone visting Reykjavik, even for a day!!

Gandhi the Indian restaurant is situated on the ground floor at Posthusstraeti 17 in the center of Reykjavik. The restaurant is small and romantic with an authentic, yet subtle, Indian atmosphere.
We chose Gandhi over the other Indian restaurant in Reykjavik that we heard of (Austur) because of it proximity to our hotel (Borg). The pricing at both based on menu reviews was high compared with even the priciest US Indian restaurants including about $12 for Pamadums which I thought were usually free. The restaurant is warm and inviting, in the basement of a building. The staff of seemingly two including the owner (I think) was a bit overwhelmed. Service slow. They brought one cold and one warm bottle of beer. Pampadums were not that tasty and a bit soft. The dishes were smaller than usual and my Chicken Tikka Masala ($32) was ok but the sauce too thick and a bit strange with chucks of vegetables. They were out of Prawns. We wonât return.

We were looking for a relatively inexpensive meal to eat on our first night in Reykjavik when we came across this noodle shop. We thought we would give it a try as the place seemed to be fairly busy and the smell when you walk into the restaurant is amazing! Now look - maybe my wife and I chose the two worst dishes on the menu, but mine lacked taste and soup (which is strange for a noodle SOUP) and my wife thought hers was really bad. I was so hungry that I ate all of mine swallowing it down like camp rations and my wife ate about half of hers. I usually take her food and finish it as I'm sure most husbands do, but not in this case.I am only giving my opinion of the food I tasted so I can't comment on the entire menu - however it wasn't so extensive that there was bound to be 'stinkers'.Other than that the restaurant is clean and the service is quick.

Well, we didn't realise there were 2 restaurants. One, a proper sit down, and the other around the corner for take away, with a few stools. Well we went to the take away with the stools, duh. But trust me, we did not suffer. The dishes were so good, we ordered more for take away. Flavor profiles for all dishes were distinct and beyond delicious. Nice heat levels were there too.

Shalimar is the Indian restaurant you wish was near your house at home. Simply decorated with plastic chairs and uncovered tables, it is unpretentious. The staff were friendly and very helpful with allergies and gluten-free options. The food was authentically spicy and the meat was of high quality (we had lamb and chicken). The food and the bread was made on site and when we asked for a revised version of the dall dish, it was prepared from scratch without fuss. The portions were fairly modest, it has to be said. Prices were authentically Icelandic: main course for five with no starters or drinks was a shade under £150. It would be half that (at most) in the UK.
