This store is one of the gems of Pittsboro. If you live in the surrounding areas — Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh, Hillsborough — it’s worth the drive to visit this unique, delightful shop. The shop is located in one of Pittsboro’s older homes. The front yard is decorated with a slew of metal sculptures, mostly quaint animals and creatures, of varying sizes and colors. These sculptures were all produced by craftsmen in villages in Africa. The front porch is lined with dozens of colorful handmade baskets of different shapes and sizes. Again, these baskets were produced by African villagers using local products and dyes. Step inside and you step into another world. Every room is like an African museum. With exception of a couple rooms that contain French fabrics at incredibly low prices, all other items are from Africa. You’ll find a wide assortment of handmade jewelry. This jewelry is decidedly African and very different from any jewelry you’d find at Belk or Macy’s. It makes a real statement. In addition, there are many carved wood pieces of varying sizes and different woods. Totems, fertility goddesses, a variety of African wildlife and African villagers. You’ll find hand-woven bowls in bright colors and patterns that are absolutely beautiful. And smaller table-top metal sculptures. They also have a nice collection of fossils of different sizes and types. There is too many fantastic items to list. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and will any questions you may have, including where each item came from and how it was made. Again, it’s well worth a trip to Pittsboro.
