Inside the old city walls of the old fortress, lies the largest and most important unexplored archaeological dig in the Balkans. The old fortress contain structures that dates to the Roman empire. It is in a state of ruined in every sense of the word. What is available, however, is spectacular and that it clearly displays what an amazing metropolis the space must have been at one time. There are intact walls, rooms, terrorists, cisterns and much more. At the same time, and on the negative side, the space is very poorly maintained and you’re free to walk among the ruins in the rubble. Many places where you are allowed to go present major falling risks. These ruins, in a different and properly managed location, would contain a numerable “do not enter“ signs with barriers to keep people from hurting themselves. That said, we walked freely and loved every minute of it. If you are interested in Roman and medieval history and want to walk through an archaeological dig waiting to happen, this is it.

Off the beaten track. We drove there and had a great day. Little local restaurants make you feel at home, incredible boat trips to visit the lake (you can even swim) and everything soo relaxing. Has an interesting statue at the bridge. At the end of the day stop but he supermarket and get something for the return trip home.

On arrival in Virpazar, the view over the lake and surrounding mountains is magnificent. The dark, rugged peaks reach from the green lake to the soft clouds and the hillside is dotted with grey stone houses. We were short on time so decided to climb up to Besac Castle, appreciate the spectacular vista and enjoy a spot of lunch. We paid 1 Euro each to enter the castle, which was worth it just for the views over the lake.
