Roadside Potatohead

I was not expecting to even find a place to get food at while I was in McCarthy, AK. Before I started my bike ride to Kennecott Mines I discovered this little place and decided to get some grub. I don’t know if it was the fact that it was still early or what but it didn’t seem that the staff were overly friendly. It could have just been me too but I didn’t feel super welcome there. The breakfast burrito that I ordered was enormous. I cannot eat a lot so I felt bad wasting it. ( Not really a complaint. Just an observation) And I asked for bacon so they put 2 or 3 pieces of limp bacon in it with out cutting it up or anything so when you took a bite the whole 4-6 inch piece of bacon came out. A little annoying but it was pretty good besides. Wow! I want you to know that we aren’t overly friendly! We pride ourselves on customer service and it’s sincere. I’m sorry it was too much for you in the morning but know it wasn’t meant to annoy you. Most people enjoy our friendly flavor. As for the bacon, we just have always done it this way and had no complaints but I will take this into consideration. Thanks for taking the time to review.

McCarthy Lodge Bistro

Working with local ingredients our chefs’ look forward to surprising and delighting guests with their unique style. Our extensive wine list pairs perfectly with our eclectic menu, focused on local ingredients like our wild caught Copper River Red Salmon.

The owners of the Currant Ridge Cabins recommended this bistro & made reservations for us, although the evening we dined the bistro was quiet. My husband & I crossed the bridge with the intention of walking into McCarthy. Much to our surprise, we saw the McCarthy Lodge shuttle and inquired about catching a ride to the bistro. The driver, without hesitation, gave us a complimentary ride and offered to drive us back to the bridge after dinner. What service! Our server seated us promptly and was attentive. My husband ordered Copper River salmon while I ordered the elk steaks. The entrees' presentations were as attractive as they were delectable...made with fresh ingredients. The wine list was expansive...featuring wines from across the country and the world. We ordered a moderately-priced Spanish wine which paired well with our dishes. Be sure to save room for one of the lovely desserts!

This was after 15 September when virtually everything in McCarthy and Kennecott are closed. They opened up for a late lunch for us at the request of Blackburn Cabins and the sandwiches and pickled vegetables were excellent. It's a tiny place just prior to the bridge but they make a special effort to provide unique food. Don't surprise Doug the bear dog when sleeping - otherwise he is very friendly.

The breakfast buffet was terrific especially the blueberry pancakes and homemade baked items. Could get eggs cooked to order as well. Dinners were awesome. Alaskan king salmon cooked to perfection the first evening and filet mignon the second night. Desserts were homemade and the wait staff was attentive and responsive. Couldn’t ask for better meals. Kudos to the chef.
