Popeye's Chop House

Have been here every year but one for my birthday since moving to greater STL area in 2010. Tenderloin over gouda mashed potatoes with red wine reduction sauce and onion straws was the special choice of the evening as all 5 of us ordered it. A good wine selection and owner walks around to every table. Always always always make a reservation!!! It is always packed!! Might be in the middle of nowhere but plenty people know about it. Worth the drive to get there I promise! There are choices for everyone! Fish, chicken, steaks, pork chops and pasta. Can get kind of loud but I dont mind coz I love this place!

Where do I begin? Well...no matter where you live - you should make a pilgrimage to Valbo's!Okay, this town is sort of "in the middle of nowhere." So you'd never guess that you'd find a gem as bright and shining as this restaurant. I'm making a HUGE deal out of this because the food was PHENOMENAL!We stopped in for lunch last week. It was "on our way" to where we needed to go, and apparently they open very early for breakfast. We'd just missed the Breakfast crowd, but got there early for Lunch. While the menu isn't ridiculously extensive, it does offer many options (including breakfast all day). A little something about me: if Fried Chicken is on the menu, I order it!When we walked in, we were greeted by a very friendly, sort of familiar type of girl. She gave us extra time to peruse the menu, then was helpful when we asked questions about the offerings (turns out that some of their recipes were her grandparents!).Anyway, I got the 2-piece fried chicken dinner. My two "sides" were corn and mashed potatoes. I know, I know...**yawn** right?? WELL!!! No sirree! This meal was more than homemade, I think it was made in heaven.Writing this is difficult, because I'm salivating just thinking about the deliciousness of that meal. The corn was cooked in an indescribable "fried," but not really fried, way. And the mashed potatoes, oh-dear-me!! They were SO GOOD! They're red potatoes, that are "mashed" like the Germans make them. YUMMY!!!!!!! What makes them the best, is the gravy. When I inquired, I found out that the gravy has shallots and sweet vermouth in it. Hmmm, YOU do the math. It was heavenly!!!Did I mention it came with a salad? Also - DELICIOUS!While the food was out of this world, I'd have to say that my favorite part was the Service. You just don't get service like that anywhere, anymore. We were madly impressed with her genuineness, attention to detail, ability to juggle many customers, and her friendly demeanor. She was kind of one-woman show, and she was impressive! It made such an impression on us, that we are still talking about it a week later.Valbo's, we'll be back. First impressions stick and I'm convinced it's worth a 100-mile drive, just to enjoy REAL FOOD and REAL PEOPLE. Thanks for being about as U.S.A. as you can get!!

We stopped by after church for a family breakfast. It was ~ 11:00am, so we had our choice or breakfast or lunch. The menu is extensive, so I usually have lower expectations, since it's difficult to do all things well. We were seated quickly with our larger group. Our waitress was friendly, helpful and our food was served quickly. It is exactly what you'd think of when you are in a small town family restaurant. Our group of 9 all chose breakfast and a variety of dishes which were ample and inexpensive. I really liked by gyro omelet and was pleasantly surprised by the taste. I'd go back.
