I think we found a local's favorite! These people take a great deal of pride in their food and atmosphere. Although the restaurant is quite small we did not feel crowded. We were the only tourists in the restaurant. Our server spoke English well and took the time to explain the dishes. We ordered the variety ravioli and the sliced steak. The food was incredible and the servers managed the full restaurant very well.

Quite a lot of restaurants in Italy are closed on Monday, so we were thankful that according to our Italian foodie guide - Virgilio was open. The description in the guide sounded wonderful, so all we had to do was get a table. It wasnât particularly crowded but there was a table of French tourists who all seemed to be very happy indeed and seemed to have been many times before. Knowing that nationâs propensity for decent food, we knew we were on to a winner. The guide we use was particularly complimentary about the cheese and cold meat selection in Virgilio, so we began with both the cheese and meat sharing plates. Both were very generous in the amount supplied, (almost too much), but the quality of the ingredients was simply excellent. I must mention at this point the quality of the bread - with a crust almost as thick, crunchy and delicious as the fabled bread of Altamura. My wife followed her usual safe route with her pasta, with a very good fettuccine with tomato sauce. A rich, tasty sauce dressed with basil - no complaints - but my wife prefers to see and taste whole fresh tomatoes such as Datterini. I had the homemade gnocchi with a lamb, (sheep?), ragu which was absolutely top-drawer. We were both too full for dessert. To accompany the meal we had a very good, (and excellent value), local Lambrusco. Service was excellent. Virgilio is a mix of cafe, enoteca, restaurant and it is to its credit that it seems to succeed at every one. It is unpretentious, friendly and delivers a quality experience at a bargain price.

One of the more popular wine bars on the Strada Luigi Carlo Farini and along with a competitor further down the street, one of our regular wine-stops. Thereâs not much room inside, (most stand outside), and the wine choices are less than the other place but what it lacks in choice, it makes up for in character. Especially the rather eclectic soundtrack from the library of vinyl, played on a suitably retro deck and amplifier. Whose volume was administered by the Big Chief. So we applauded an increase when Marvin Gaye was being played but fled when John Denver took his place. Each to their own I suppose. The bar also seems to attract the more charismatic local clientele, which makes it a very enjoyable place to enjoy a glass or five of of wine.
