Vala Rooftop

Vala Rooftop is the most special place in the city. Modern, stylish and fun, is what better defines this lounge bar. It offers delicious cocktails, mixed by the best bartenders in town.

The rooftop bar opens each night at around 6pm and offers sweeping views of Durres seafront. I was surprised to be the only one sat in the bar around 8pm on a Saturday night, but the totally inappropriate music being played maybe was a hint. There's Belgian and German beers for sale - as well as the local offerings - so a decent enough variety in fairness. The location is excellent too - as is the cleanliness and spaciousness. I just feel they could maybe do more, as it's a great spot for a few drinks, whether as a group of friends or something more intimate.

Kokomani Winery and restaurant was recommended to me by one of my friends, especially for the type of festivities I was organizing...my 45th B-day! Having lived away from Albania for the last 20 years, I googled the place at first and contacted the owners through their contact details in their web site. From that moment I knew I was about to enter an exciting adventure of organizing my event from over 2500 km away, trusting my guts and others on the chosen place. Anila and Blerim, the owners, young fellow Albanians, who, after living and working in Italy for over 10 years, returned to open the place and establish a business which I am sure in the near future will be a very successful one. Their professionalism and human touch made me feel comfortable only by just corresponding with them, their recommendations for the menu was just what I was looking for...local traditional cuisine, bio food, own wine produced by the grapes of the area, seasonal products... arriving in Albania two days before the event, I never felt the stress and pressure, since I trusted everything was taken care of. And so it was. As decided by both sides, it was only a phone away to feel the warmth of the owners and to just prepare myself for a nice surprise. Just to make sure we got the right things we went over the menu and what has been agreed upon and two days later myself and 22 other people with me (some friends of mine arriving from abroad only for this special occasion), were on a bus to 40 minutes away from Tirana (transportation provided by a travelling agency is a must in this case, due to the fact of unlimited wine consumption they offer at the winery).Upon arrival at the winery we were greeted by Anila, a very nice lady and their welcoming glass of drink to warm up (red wine with pomegranate juice and clove)...following the greetings, the group took a tour in the winery with explanations on the grapes of the area. When touring the place, one notices the Tuscan architecture in the structure of the place, and its situation on the top of a hill, gives you a breathtaking scenery view to the entire area, up to the Adriatic sea. Being February, the weather played with the sunny and gray sky, while green and brownish colors on the ground, pleasant to the eyes. Following the tour, we went inside to a beautifully set table, nice cutlery and excellent service...the first course was made of antipasti, seasonal salads, and byreks (pies) typical of the area, cheeses and grilled vegetables, all using local products. Other courses of the menu were served with goat meat and chicken, all served with local specialty side dishes. While I mention the meals, I can not forget to mention the wine, with all three specialties the winery produces, served to the guests; Saint Michel (Shen Mehill in Albanian), Shesh i Zi and Shesh i Bardhe (local autoctone variety of grapes). During the meal, Albanian music played in the background, while the fireplace kept warming up the entire room, with burning woods...And in the pleasure of family and friends, gastronomic experience and lots of fun, I spent my celebration for my B-Day lunch in a place I knew nothing before visiting, a gem hidden away from the main road, but worth visiting for a memorable and unforgettable experience, memories, and definitely for a desire to return again. The gift I was presented from the owners, a bottle of red wine inside of a wooden box with a branch of olive inside, a symbol of peace, and jars of jams from their own product was such a sweet one, something I enjoyed, because of the attention to my special occasion. Since all photos I have are personal with my guests, I suggest to check the web site of the winery. All I can say, while in Tirana, Durres or the area, take a break from city life, go and visit the winery, taste the wine and check the gastronomy of the restaurant, because I am sure you will fall in love with all this place has to offer.
