It lies in the heart of the wide expanse of the Southland Plains on the Oreti or New River some 18 km north of Bluff, which is the southernmost town in the South Island. It sits amid rich farmland that is bordered by large areas of conservation land and marine reserves, including Fiordland National Park covering the south-west corner of the South Island and the Catlins coastal region.

Love this place, the food is superb especially the large Bento box, BUT there was sushi in the Bento and no wasabi, I asked for some and was informed there would be an extra fifty cent charge, I objected to this, then told I could have a little for twenty cents, objected again and got no wasabi. The Bento was $28-00 and it was superb, where is the intelligence of the chef, twenty cents no was, principle here, he could have lost a customer, he hasn't as I will go again as the food is so good, but next time be prepared.

This is a very small, very modest restaurant. I had the sushi and found it to be affordable and good. They make the sushi fresh, which is nice. It was good, however it did fall apart fairly easily. This is not the type of place you go to for a fancy evening out, but if you're looking for something slightly cheaper and convenient, then this is a very good place. I happened to go there, when it was quiet and felt that the service was friendly.
Clean, fresh with food so good! Located on Invercargill's Dee Street, easy access from either Spey or Dee Streets and good car parking. The opportunity to chose and pack your own selection into a take-away container plus hot food makes this place a MUST to visit

My colleague and I were looking for a place to have tea and finally selected Bonsai after searching around some other possible choices of different cuisines in the area.At first I didn't recognize the place but after a while it dawned on me that some 30 to 40 years ago when I lived in Southland the premises had been one of our favourite coffee bars for lunch when in Invercargill. Unfortunately the appearance inside now is not all that attractive. We made our choices from the menu. I selected Stewart Island Salmon Teriyaki. It came with a bowl of Miso soup and a side dish or rather gluggy rice. The salmon and salad was delicious and very tasty and went someway to make up for the negatives. I felt that if the place could be spruced up inside and made more attractive then it could have some potential to improve. At the moment it does give the impression of being fairly mediocre.
