Seafood, sushi, grill and deli. At Willoughby & Co we believe that simple food is good food. Our fresh line fish is sourced directly from local suppliers and filleted in-house and grilled to unlock all delicious flavours without smothering it in sauces.
Our family have been Willoughby regulars both in Johannesburg and Cape Town for at least the past 20 years. Unfortunately, whereas the Cape Town Willoughbys has maintained its standards, the same cannot be said for the Johannesburg restaurant. It is tired and everything about it from the food to the decor and the service is the same. It's as if they are merely going through the motions of pretending to be a restaurant. We ate there this past week after a long break and the six king prawns I ordered were not only small - the size of queens at best - but five not six were originally served. They were so overcooked that the flesh stuck to the shell making it all but impossible to eat with a knife and fork. No piri piri was served as originally ordered and it only arrived midway through the meal. I mean how long does it take to fill a small jug with the sauce and bring it to the table? When our waiter enquired about the food, I pointed out the problem with my prawns and, to be fair, he offered to replace them but by then my guests were half way through their main courses and by the time my substitute meal would have arrived I would be keeping everyone waiting and we all had places to be after lunch. And how difficult is it to serve ice cream? Three people in our party ordered the ice cream on the very limited desert menu - one scoop each of chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. Except we were served with three bowls which contained all chocolate, all strawberry and all vanilla, respectively. Not a big deal I know but still. The leather on the chairs was frayed and the wooden table top sticky. The wholesome, farm style, brown bread served with the meals had been replaced with small, doughy, white rolls. The usually full restaurant was all but empty as opposed to JB Rivers and Tashas in the same building which were almost full. Sorry, but Willoughbys in Johannesburg is like bad wine - to be laid down and avoided.

Resturants
A brightly lit, fast-paced, and very loud restaurant. We chose this restaurant based upon its reputation and were disappointed. Rather than an elegant and relaxing evening we were rushed the entire evening by an overly aggressive waiter who seemed to want to get rid of us as soon as possible. The food was only average. One example would be the grilled kingclip that had no indication of being grilled. There were no grill marks nor flavor. Overall, our visit was quite disappointing.
