Why is this place so busy? The food is miserable, prices are high, the decor is painfully ugly, and the service can be slow because the restaurant is chronically under-staffed. I suspect it's the lure of a traffic accident that you can't look away from. Yet visitors from afar get sucked into this vortex of horror by skillful marketing and word-of-mouth like "You have to see the weird bathrooms". I live in SLO and can tell you there are so many excellent restaurants here, why wouldn't you check those out?

Tahoe Joe's

My oldest daughter, a local, has had good experiences here & suggested it. My wife & I arrived just before 5 midweek. We requested a table for 3, possibly 4. The nice young hostess stated she would go see where to put us. (Shouldn’t she know this already?) That took way too long in a restaurant that had many, many vacant tables. When finally seated, it took way too long for a server to approach us. I caught the eye of one young lady who seemed to understand, but nothing happened. When our waitress finally appeared, there were 2. It was explained that one was a trainee. From that point on, service was outstanding. I’m not a steak guy. Or a fish guy. That pretty well sums up the menu. I ordered crab cakes, which I occasionally order only as an appetizer. These were some of the better I’ve had on this coast. Tahoe Joe’s is apparently viewed as a steak house. The women had ribeye. My wife recently had one of the best ever (at twice the price) at a true steak house in Chico. She equated Tahoe Joe’s to more of a Sizzler entree.

What attracted me to McLintocks SLO Restaurant was the Farmers Market show outside their front door every Thursday evening. The line was way down the street 20 minutes before opening bell! All these folks can’t be wrong! Well they are partly right! We sat on the back terrace that overlooks a poor excuse for a river and ordered ribs and a half smoked chicken.... well it turns out that both were unavailable and out of inventory! So we ordered baby back ribs at their suggestion and chicken breast. The baby ribs felt like they had been warmed up for the occasion and the chicken breast was dry. Fries, camp beans, onion rings and cole slaw were just great. Dinner for two around $50 including small beers. Returning to the sizzle on the street I was impressed with the wood fire, the grills, the teamwork, the efficient feeding of hundreds, the reasonable prices, the smoke and the ambiance but I realized that quality bbq cooking was not top priority. Pre-prepped meats grilled over large fires with chances of significant cooking variations did not affect the enthusiasm of the ravenous crowd. If you really want great bbq check your choices and reviews carefully! One if my passions is visiting award winning bbq joints from east to west coast, mostly Texas, Kentucky and anywhere I can find them!

Very interesting and extensive menu. You won’t see anything like it anywhere. Peruvian is a blend of Asian, Spanish, Italian, etc. fusion. We were there with another couple. The portions are large! The four of us split the two Choclo empanadas - a just bite each, but very tasty. We split the De Mi Terra and La Pituca salads, also very tasty with a blend of flavors. Maybe the best of the three main dishes, the ladies split the lamb shank and still had some left over. I had the Senor Lomo, pieces of filet mignon in sort of a stew, and the other guy had the Pollo a la Brasa. Both very good, although the Lomo was a little saltier than I prefer. We brought our own wine, and just $10 corkage fee for each bottle. We definitely will be back!
