We weren't sure quite what to expect...Easter Sunday and the door closed. We rang the bell, as directed, however and were led down into the old pressing room where they are several tables. Others clearly had booked, but there was a spare table for two. No written menu, and therefore no prices to see in advance, but we chose starters of cold with aubergine and seafood soup with beans, followed by lamb in a deliciously thick sticky sauce. A jug of house red. Coffee. And the owner sang! The bill was a surprise as we mis-read the amount, but I have a feeling the 50 euros would have included dessert had we had the space. Delightful.

Probably the best restaurant we have eaten at in Spain.Simply stunning!!!We were staying in the hotel and ate here on two nights (having planned to eat here only once, but been so impressed on the first night). The food is amazing, wine list very impressive (but not too long and confusing), setting is gorgeous, and the service is lovely, professional, and friendly. It is very definitely the best thing about this hotel, and we would consider coming back just for the food.It is not cheap, but certainly not overly expensive.Very, very highly recommended.

Walking round Ampudia on a Sunday lunchtime in March, the place was completely dead, the streets empty and everything closed. We had heard about the Casa del Abad on the main road to eat, but when we saw the prices we gawked and went off to find somewhere else. This was the only other place open, and looked dead too from the outside, but on entering we discovered where everyone was, inside! It was heaving with locals and had a great atmosphere. We had gone in intending to have the menu which was advertised outside (looked good), but when we got in and saw all the tapas on the bar, we opted for some of that instead, and the two of us ended up eating lunch for 12 Euros between us! It was good food, a pretty good selection for a village bar, and the upstairs and restaurant area (where we didn't end up going), looked pretty nice and refurbished (the loos were nice, always a good sign!). It was a good find and it's always nice to know you're in the most popular place with the locals in town!

We went for their Lechazo but it was not available, so instead ordered lamb cutlets and rare filet steak. The cutlets were scrappy remainders and the steak was fridge temperature inside. Admitedly it was Easter Sunday at the end of a long busy weekend. We went with low expectations and were not disappointed.
