Mediterranean/Continental/Restaurant
This visit to Crabtrees was our first since it opened. Mediterranean/American style is not my first choice for eating out. But to make the wife happy and our friend happy since it was her birthday and our 50th anniversary. The service is excellent with water being repeatedly refilled and the crumbs removed very quickly. The 1st thing that annoyed me was this pesky fly throughout the whole time we were at the table. No one is going take swats during a meal so I have no solution. The front door is constantly being opened. My 2nd problem (and I know it is my fault), was the vegetables. Each dish comes with mashed potato and a mix of vegetables like yellow and green zucchini, stringbeans, and pieces of broccoli(ugh) and some slices of beets (ugh 2).For starters our friend had the buratta salad and i shared the escargot with wifey. That came in the full shell on a plate of garlic sauce which is what makes this dish so good. For main course our friend had the darla's chicken, wife had the salmon and I had the porterhouse style 16 ounce pork chop. The chop was huge and covered with sauteed peppers and onions. The chop was very good but I probably would have been happier had I stuck with my first thought of getting 2 appetizers and a salad. I studied the menu and really wanted the calamari plate and the escargot with a salad.Appetizers and salads run from $11-15 while most main dishes run in the teens to 30+.When we arrived the place was not too filled but when we left on a Sunday nite , it was packed. If you are still hungry for dessert, get the gelato.
we stopped in for lunch, after reading some of their reviews, verified that they had a $20 price fixed lunch-absolutely worth while!!!they offer appetizer [soup, salad], entree [choice of ~6] & dessert.we had-onion soup [cheesy w sweet onions & plentiful] also a caesar salad w/o croutons [gluten free]. then baby back ribs [again plentiful] and scottish salmon [nicely done w a good. tasty crust broiled on]-ribs came w fries & slaw, fish w rice. dessert chocolate lava cake w vanilla ice cream & just ice cream [try the cinnamon-refreshing way to end the meal. glass of NZ sauvignon blanc [they call it on tap] fruity, not overly strong, BIG POUR. this can't be beat for $20pp price fixed lunch !!!

And celebrate we did! Drinks, especially the wonderful choices of Belgian beers are terrific. I always enjoy the mussels here at Waterzooi along with the required pomme frites . Any sauce you choose for the mussels is fantastic but I enjoy the Pernod. Service is good, portions are good size. Remember to realize that this restaurant Iâd usually noisy but lots of fun.

Check out their crabcakes whether you like it pan seared for $12 or the NY style for $14. You decide which one you like better. The NY one is served up with Dijon mustard sauce while the other one is with a Old Bay remoulade sauce. Shrimp Po-Boy for $10 is priced right and tasty IMHO :-) Great deal. Fish & Chips for $7 is a great bargain and sure fills the tummy up. Colossal Cocunut Shrimp for $12 is served with a homemade orange marmalade sauce that Paddington the bear would enjoy. I would've liked the shrimps to be really colossal but jumbo is fine with me. All items are served with a choice of shoestring fries, sweet potato fries or a side garden salad. Hushpuppies are included but they are sweet like the cornbread batter than savory ones. As a suggestion...jalapeño hushpuppies would be a great addition to invite the spicy lovers in the neighborhood. Would've given 5 stars if my french fries/sweet potato fries/fish & chips/coconut shrimp was executed with a better fry...my fries were kindof soggy and my fish & chips all needed to be crisper. The shrimps and fish were cooked well not over-cooked but could've been crispy. Probably the oil was not hot enough at the moment of fry. It was dinnertime but the place was not crowded. Happy Eating and I'll see you around the table but here I prefer to order to go and get my seafood fix privately at home.
