Cafe de Oude Jan have a nice and sizeable outdoor terrace at the foot of the Old John - the old church of Delft, of which construction started around 1250. At the moment regrettably a bit disturbed by building activity. However it should be said the Angus burger with goat cheese and Jalapenos was above average. Prices quite reasonable.

We decided to spend our 10th anniversary away from our central Amsterdam flat and thought Delft would make a good choice. Bierfabriek turned out to a real homophobic hassle. As there was nearly nothing opened for New Year's Eve, we made reservations for 20:30 weeks in advance and I went in the afternoon on the 31st to order a small cake for my husband as a surprise. Everything seemed fine.We showed up at 20:25 and ordered the New Year's special menu. By 21:30 we had no food. Other people who had come in after us had already been served and finished their meals. By 21:40 after asking they brought tiny appetisers. By 22:10 still no food. We had enough and decided to leave to try and get food somewhere else. We were not loud or drunk (that was the large group of straight guys in the back - who appeared to have no problem getting food) - just a middle-aged gay couple trying to get a meal. I went up to pay (probably less than 15 euros at that point) and asked what was the problem. The man said there had been "miscommunication" and I asked what - the fact they we were from America, Norway or even gay. Then he said the drinks were on the house. I had enough - homophobia in the Netherlands! Maybe not but it sure felt like it. Unbelievable. We left and could not find anything open - we put together what we could from vending machines in the hotel. I do not play the gay card but Bierfabriek absolutely ruined New Year's Eve and our 10th anniversary. Not the end of the Earth in the scope of life and first-world problems but the restaurant responded by email that they have "gay people on their staff". This is even more patronizing - they were unwelcoming to guests regardless. Lesson learned - this place is a total no: New Year's Eve, gay, straight, purple or otherwise. PS - super-secret restaurant tip - GAY PEOPLE ARE AMAZING TIPPERS, even in Europe, because we know how hard the work is and do not treat people like servants. Sadly Bierfabriek Delft has not figured that out.Dear Charles,Thank you for your message. After carefully evaluating your complains we sincerely apologize for the service we offered you and your husband on New Years Eve. We regret to hear that your anniversary and NYE turned out in a bad experience. However, I can assure you that this had nothing to do with sexual orientation and we firmly distance ourselves from these statements. As explained, due to miscommunication between our staff (because it was the busiest New Years Eve since we opened in 2014) your dinner was not served in a timely fashion. This is completely on us and hence we apologize. Therefor we would like to invite you back to either Bierfabriek Delft or Bierfabriek Amsterdam so we can make it up to you. Located on the Beestenmarkt, this perfect place to stop and watch the world go by, whilst resting your feet after a long day being tourists in the city. Pleasant service with great cups of Earl Grey tea (Mr Jones Monkey's Wedding organic tea bags) and home made mint tea using a large amount of fresh sprigs of mint.
