Top 4 Mexican food in Galena, Illinois, United States

Find out what Mexican restaurants to try in Galena. If not for the modern-day goods sold in the retail establishments, you might think Galena was frozen in time. The six-block Main Street boasts striking examples of various architectural styles, ranging from French Colonial to Greek Revival, and a whopping 85% of the town is a national historic district. General Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th U.S. President, lived here briefly before leaving to head the Union troops in the Civil War. Upon his triumphant return, the town presented him with an elegant mansion. That house and other restored historic homes are open to the public. There's much more here to fascinate the history enthusiast: the Old Market House and the Historical Society and Museum, housed in a stunning Italianate home. Before its Civil War glory days, Galena was a booming lead-mining town. Today, you can descend underground into the Vinegar Hill Lead Mine. But don't stay down there too long, or you won't get to enjoy the rolling hills and lush valleys of this charming getaway, which also offers fine dining, numerous bed and breakfasts, golfing and antiquing.

Small place but excellent food and service. We split everything and walked away full. They placed homemade chips and a fresh, chunky pico which was great. We then ordered the chunky guacamole (which I would call an avocado tomato salad) was perfectly made with a tang of lime juice. And we ordered the pork in the sauce that the menu said was a special in their hometown of Campeche (I don't recall the name - something pibil?) and it didn't disappoint. We love finding the restaurants in the tourist town that aren't on the strip and we will be back to this one.

Los Aztecas II

My wife and I had dinner at Lis Aztecas. She had the Aztecs fajitas and I had Pollo Chori. We were both please with our meals. The fajitas had chicken, steak, shrimp and chorizo. She said the refined beans and guacamole were great and also enjoyed the margaritas. My meal was a chicken breast with chorizo and cheese. It was better than average. Servings were generous, which I find typical for Mexican restaurants, and you get complimentary chips and salsa. It would be a great place to take teenage boys. Atmosphere is casual/ okay. Service was good.

If this was authentic Mexican food, then authentic Mexican food is extremely bland. The chips tasted like they came out of a bag, and the salsa had more tomato sauce taste than salsa. I had the chicken fajitas which tasted like plain chicken, onions, and peppers, no flavoring, (and the waiter gave me a FORK to dish it out of the sizzling pan to put on the tortillas -- really?!) My husband had a Margarita which he said was watered down quite a bit, and he had the burrito which he said was basically ground beef sauteed with some onion, again no flavor. We had such a craving for Mexican food that evening and Campeche was closed. I hate leaving a bad review but hopefully they see this and do some retooling!

During a girls' shopping trip, the four of us were looking for drinks fairly late, so we ventured in. There were hardly any people in the bar. We were seated and our server (she was incredibly sweet) took great care of us! They do not carry any wine. We had gin and tonic, raspberry margarita on the rocks, a pina colada, and a vodka cranberry. The pina colada and margarita came with a cute little paper umbrella. They serve food, but we had already eaten. A great little place to stop in for a drink.
