Il Tartufo is in a beautiful space with good ambiance and friendly, attentive service. They have a regular menu consisting of smaller bites and a few pasta dishes, as well as a special menu centered around the truffle of the moment. Truffles are about the simplest ingredient to make anything taste good. Its like a foods unfair advantage against other dishes like athletes using steroids. Just add something truffle and it immediately tastes better. So I went into this place having high expectations. Overall it was an enjoyable experience.

Urbania was celebrating its patron Saint Christopher with most restos booked but an inquiry to Casa Tintoria got us a fine table in a lush setting by the river. Outstanding start was the antipasto course with five small plates served sequentially, each being a surprise of texture and taste. Skipped the pasta and went to mains which were excellently prepared and served. Servers were efficient in spite of being short staffed. The historic building in itself is a treat to explore. The approach walkway is very steep downhill so flat shoes may be advisable.

The food is just not that good. If you know Italian food, this is not the place to go. And then the prices are just a little too high. I would never recommend this one. After being served our secondi (meat) which consisted merely of fat (and no vegetables, no potatoes on the plate) we went to "the Taverna" next to the road to get a much better 6 euro pizza.

The place is really small. Even the alley where you eat in the open is really narrow. But the smile of the waiter is so big that it compensates everything. The food is traditional and well done. The portions are generous. The prices are reasonable. We shall go back.
