Mikasa, the Main Dining Room, has proudly served French cuisine since the hotel started. Its splendid traditional flavors can be enjoyed along with the extensive selection of wines in the room surrounded by masterpieces of art.
Mikasa has two dining sections. The large, high-ceilinged main dining room is a striking mix of Japanese and western. The coffered wood ceiling, hanging lamps, and wood framing of the walls, doors, and windows are all Japanese. The tables, chairs, table settings are all western. The space is elegantly beautiful, a harmony of browns and greens, but sometimes overrun by Japanese tour groups. On the west and north sides of the main dining room is an L-shaped terrace with a single line of tables set against window walls. These tables overlook a maple forest, and beyond that the celebrated Five-Storey Pagoda of Kofukuji Temple. If you eat at Mikasa, try to snag one of these tables. Youâll spend your meal looking at the Japan of your dreams. The food doesnât live up to the view. Itâs billed as French, but itâs really more like Basic Western: fried fish, chicken cutlet, steak. Itâs well-cooked and artfully presented â is food ever really bad in Japan? â but Mikasaâs cuisine isnât going to expand your culinary horizons. On the other hand, with a view like that, who cares?

We had a set lunch at this restaurant while at Nara Park. It is obviously a reception Centre and the pink clad chairs were a dead giveaway that they cater for weddings. The views from the huge windows are lovely with rolling lawns and a tiny bridge in the distance. A very relaxing place and the food was good too. They seem to cater for groups, not individuals.

We took a complete course and some more. Although many of the dishes were facinating, they have completly ignored some of our wishes. A vegetarian got clamps, some hot drinks were completly forgotten, and from the middle of the evening no explenation was given to the dishes. Also, a request regarding a child's meal was completly ignored. An effort is very visiable, but much more effort is needed to be worth the price. Until improvments are done - it is not worth the price. Sorry...

Amazed by the good comments about this cafe. It does have a lovely peaceful look from the very crowded street, that fact that it was easy to get a table should have been a warning sign. French inspired menu.. Pleasant place to sit. My husband ordered paella and was told it would take 15 minutes. That was fine, but it arrived in about 2 minutes, was very dried up and he had no desire to eat it. I ordered a chicken galette, the crepe looked like it had been sitting around for a while and had a grey tone. It was OK, but not appealing at all. No one was the slightest bit interested that we hadn't enjoyed our meal. We aren't people who complain for no reason. NOT RECOMMENDED.
