Lovely Normandy restaurant, fairly close to my sisters home and about 20 minutes from Giverny. The Restaurant Gabriel looks “French” from the outside but more Scandinavian modern in the inside with one large room with 60’s wood and Formica tables. Though the room is large it is quite and somehow manages to feel intimate with 60-70s music playing softly in the background. The service was impeccable and the presentation very pleasing to the eye. They promote the products of the region through local producers so everything is fresh. We were each served a delicious cold green pea soup served in a parfait glass. I ordered one of their Menu options, they have several along with a few Ala Cart options. My starter was a shrimp cocktail, again presented beautifully and very tasty. My pork dish was divine and presented on a bed of an incredible chopped mushroom dish. My menu included the appropriate wine accompaniment, which was the only disappointment of the evening – light not full bodied. My sister ordered the filet mignon, again the presentation was lovely however she found the meat touch (she thought it fresh beef rather than aged). Her starter was an absolutely fantastic Foie gras. My brother-in-law’s selection was the steak tartare which he said he would order again. Another lovely evening in Normandy. Price range 30E to 75E including wine.

Dined here on a recommendation and initial impressions were excellent: good wine (and sensibly priced) and a small but appetising menu. The starters were very good - a special mention of the Camembert which was lovely with apple underneath - but the mains were rather disappointing and went unfinished. Staff were perfectly pleasant and service good. Perhaps we got a bad day for the mains, but it was a little bit of a shame after the high standard of the first course!

la chaine d'or

La Chaîne d’Or gets her name from the history of the 18th century, when the house was considered as a toll house. A large chain was crossing the Seine river between the rives and the island. Each boat that wanted to cross the river from La Havre to Paris

Reading the Summer Menu in the street, we decided to have a 'posh meal' on our final night at Les Andelys, and went in to book a table. The courtyard and reception area impressed us, and the booking was taken pleasantly, so we were optimistic as we arrived the following FridAy. The dining room was attractive to enter, with a view over the river, and nice big tables. Unfortunately there was a CD of light American vocal music playing constantly, and very boring, no change of style or tempo.About ten tables became occupied in the course of the (rather slow) service of our dinner. We began well, with a tasty small round fish cake, sitting in an egg cup of diluted soy sauce, which I thought was nice. My husband enjoyed the nicely cooked steak he had, and my pork chop was also carefully cooked and very tender for a pork chop. The only other course I particularly liked was the cheese, a splendid buffet, of which one could have a small selection. I agree with the comments made by another reviewer about the raspberry tartlet. It was pretty, but not nice to eat. The atmosphere was very subdued, the food expensive, and service slow. It would perhaps have been a good spot if you had some really fascinating subject on which to pontificate, but it wasn't a relaxing place to be. I do wonder if it used to be much better and is struggling with an identity that no longer has much to contribute to local cuisine. The building and position are marvellous, but the ducks on the river, and whether or not passers by had their umbrellas up, were more interesting than the food. This was a real pity, as we had begun with such high hopes.Dear GuestWe thank you for taking time giving your advice on our service which will help us to improve our standards. We regret that you considered our service as rather slow, our guests come usually to take a nice time resting in front of the Seine river and enjoying their meal. If we do rush, it spoils their evening, especially on friday night. We obvioulsy agree to adapt our tempo according to our guests expectations and you should have mentionned to us that you wanted us to serve you a little quicker.Concerning our cuisine, everything is home made and we regret that you did not enjoyed our raspberry tart, cooked under demand at the beginning of the meal and garnished with home made whipped cream and fresh raspberries from Normandy (Growed by a local farm located 8 km from Les Andelys). Nevertheless, we thank you for your comments regarding your main courses and our cheeses assortment. We understand you did not liked our music selection, which is an assortment of Jazz Crooners, most of our guests enjoy this kind of music and encourage us with this choice. Unfortunately, it is complicated to satisfy all tastes of music and styles. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you in la Chaîne d'Or for another stay in Normandy.La Chaîne d'Or

A beautiful hidden gem with a walled garden that's a pleasure to be in; eat in then relax after your meal.We had a wonderful welcome; recommendations from the owner when choosing our food (which proved to be excellent). The Italian food is authentic as the owner is Italian himself; pizzas look wonderful, but we had a mushroom risotto and beef pasta meal - both very rich and creamy. As desserts we chose tiramisu and I had a trio of desserts plus coffee (€2 extra) divine! We were also offered a digestive of lemon schnapps (or similar). An excellent choice for lunch and evening dining.
