Brakel (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈbraːkəl]) is a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders in the Denderstreek and the Flemish Ardennes. The name is derived from a Carolingian villa Braglo first mentioned in 866 and located in the center of Opbrakel. Since 1970, the municipality has comprised the villages of Nederbrakel, Opbrakel, Michelbeke, Elst, Zegelsem. In 1977 Everbeek, Parike and part of Sint-Maria-Oudenhove were added. On January 1, 2006, Brakel had a population of 13,726. The area is 56.46 km² which gives a population density of 243 per km². The mayor is Alexander De Croo.

Living relatively nearby, in the beautiful rural area of the Flemish Ardennes, we visit this place regularly. We always receive a warm welcome, and the owners make a point of knowing their customers and making people feel at home. You can tell how passionate they are about their place and all it provides, the food, the various teas and coffees and specialties, the knowledge behind them, the personalised service for those with different needs, the tasteful decorations and styling. Excellent place to spend time in the garden when the weather is good as well.

The place is a little out of town (and uphill), but worth the effort. Beautiful terrace, very kind staff. Good house wine by the glass. Rather large portion vol au vent and spaghetti. Well prepared, but not really special. The garnalen kroketjes had few shrimps. Good ristretto, tasty and hot (on the terrace).
