Springfield is perhaps best known as the birthplace of basketball and home of the Basketball Hall of Fame. (The story goes that local physical education teacher James Naismith invented the sport to fill the gaps between football and baseball seasons.) But this historic town on the shores of the Connecticut River is famous for a few other reasons and definitely worth a quick jaunt or weekend away. Springfield was the birthplace and home of beloved children's author and illustrator, Theodore Geisel, Dr. Seuss. In fact, the Zoo in Forest Park, a sure hit with the kids, is said to be the inspiration for many of his wild and wacky tales. Wander through the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden, at the Quadrangle, for a look at the Cat in the Hat and Yertle the Turtle cast in bronze. The city served as a major arsenal during the Revolutionary War, a role that is commemorated at the Springfield Armory National Historic Site, which displays an enormous collection of small pistols. History buffs will also enjoy the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum, a tribute to the ordinary people of the region who, during various periods in time, did extraordinary things.

White Hut

Made to order burgers, fries and onion rings. Good and inexpensive option while visiting the Big E. It’s just outside the fairgrounds. Beef patties are thin, so go got the double meat for $4.95. Fries and Onion rings are nice and crispy. Solid but not quite as good as In N Out burger.

Stopped for a quick bite. We had the Turkey Special and the Big Beef, with shoestring fries and sweet potato fries and some tater tots. Both sandwiches were delicious. The turkey was on flat bread, and the big beef was on a brioche roll. The waitress was so friendly and warm. The place is small and quaint, making you feel like you are at a friend's house for lunch. Can't wait to go back and get the breakfast!

Hanna's Diner & Deli Shoppe

Hanna's is a no-frills diner with a menu of standard American fare and Polish specialties. We had the Polish platter for lunch and were not disappointed, except perhaps for the slightly doughy perogis. The bigos (hunter's stew) and kielbasa hit the spot and the service was swift and friendly. One of us had a cheeseburger: passable but unexciting. Note: Hanna's is on Main St. in the Indian Orchard neighborhood of Springfield, not the Main St. downtown.

Route 66 Diner

The Route 66 is your typical diner, right down the street from Springfield Central High School. Clean with lots of chrome and typical diner food. My wife and I often frequent it on Saturday mornings. Big omlets with fresh veggies and tons of butter or bacon, eggs and toast are the norm and cooked the way I like them.
