Shan food is very delicious, particularly the Shan noodles and there are lots of restaurants in Taunggyi that serves Shan Food. But once in a while we crave for other foods as well and Lotus Thai Restaurant offers a welcome alternative, Thai Food. I have been there only once and I can say this joint serves quality food. I have tried their pork stew and it is delicious. I do not know how authentic as I am not an expert on Thai Cuisine, but the dish is done right, the pork is very tender, seasoning is right and the tamarind based dip is typically Thai, piquant, hot and spicy. The owner Eddie was very gracious and was very helpful in recommending the dish for a single diner with special dietary needs. The serving and table setting was well done and the restaurant is very pleasing, neat and tidy, not cluttered unlike the other restaurants. Next time I come I will try the seafood hotpot.

Este pequeño y agradable restaurante, regentado por una adorable pareja, fue un descubrimiento en nuestra estancia en Inle lake. La comida es sencillamente deliciosa. El mejor lugar para cenar en la zona noroeste del lago.

In the isolated community of Taunggyi, high up in the Shan Mountains are two restaurants on East Circular Road with a mere 20 meters separating them. One is heavenly, while the other is hellish. The “heavenly” eatery is D-16 Bakery and Café. That place is unique in that it is the only place I’ve gotten San Francisco Sourdough Bread done right since I left the Bay Area 35 years ago. I’ve lived in six countries and many, many bakeries/cafes advertized “sourdough” loaves but none except for D-16 passed the taste test. D-16’s sourdough is right on the money. So for the weary traveler that has a hankering for the real McCoy San Francisco Sourdough loaf then D-16 Bakery and Café is the place for you. It has the perfect degree of sourness, airiness and aroma. Amazing find in the Myanmar mountains.Down the street from D-16 on the corner is “Burger House Restaurant and Bar” which specializes in western cuisine which is the “hellish” canteen in the title. They had several Mexican dishes on the menu, burritos, nachos and enchiladas. As a lark decided on the enchiladas; at least the photo on the menu looked vaguely like a plate of enchiladas. Placed my order and a draught and waited. And waited. And waited. After 45 minutes I was wondering if they were having them shipped over from Mexico. In another 10 minutes the so-called enchiladas arrived looking nothing like the picture on the menu. It was one flour tortilla folded in a square with some Myanmar pork chunks and bell pepper in a soy sauce mixture as filling. Enchiladas are normally made with corn tortillas wrapped around shredded meat and cheese covered with spicy red Chile sauce. The Taunggyi Burger House enchiladas weren’t spicy, no red chilies, no corn tortillas, nothing Mexican whatsoever. A culinary travesty. Considering the bill came to nearly $9 for the fake enchiladas and one draught beer it could safely be said the enchilada plate is way over priced besides being pathetic.
