Discover Restaurants offering the best Asian food in Soweto, Johannesburg, Gauteng. An acronym for South Western Townships, Soweto was dubbed as such in 1963. The area began in the late 19th century as a temporary neighborhood for gold mine workers, then later became a black Johannesburg ghetto with forced apartheid settlement. In 1976, Soweto garnered international headlines with its deadly uprising against Afrikaans-only language education. The Mandela Family Museum and the recently restored Credo Mutwa Village (with its Zulu and Sotho homesteads) are two can't-miss sights.

The Great Eastern Food Bar can be a bit pricey, but the food is always delicious. Sitting on the patio is the best, and the staff are friendly, but can look rather taxed at times. The dumplings are by far my favourites, but all the food is fresh and prepared in sight of customers, which can be fun. Booking essential.

Cheap food, great service, dossas to die for (we had the masala dossa with potato). Also had a refreshing mint lemonade drink. Also quaint decor and clean. Only downside: no wifi. No biggie though as the manager helped us to book an uber through his cellphone.Highly recommended.
