Reviews on Asian food in Salvador, State of Bahia, Brazil. Brazil's former capital is renowned for its African-influenced cuisine, music and architecture. Known as "the Capital of Joy," because of its exuberant week-long Carnaval celebrations, Salvador brims with contemporary music and art amid architecture that has gone untouched since the 17th century.

Shanti Restaurante

Shanti is a cozy restaurant right at the heart of Rio Vermelho, the "bohemian district" in Salvador. It serves delicious Indian food, but also offers special menus depending on the day (Thai food at Monday, for example).Juices are delicious! I tested mango with pepper!A tip is to be prepared to have to wait a bit before getting a table. You have to remove your shoes to get in the tables area, and you'll be sitting on cushion on carpets.

Tokai

In Brazil, the japanese cooking has been adapted to fit the local taste, giving interesting results. Sugar is used more intensively, giving more saturated tastes. There is an extensive choice of grilled vegetables. A more obvious example are the "sakerinhas", a variant of caipirinha which uses sake instead of cachaça. The Tokai restaurant extends this with some dishes of Chinese origin, giving a very extensive menu. I needed the whole meal to read it, so obviously I started earlier by following the garçon's suggestion: the Tokai degustation, a mix of 20 sashimi and sushi. I completed with grilled brocolis. The marriage of tastes was excellent. I was already fed with this (supposedly a starter), so that I had no occasion to experiment the main dishes nor the desserts.

I do not like the concept of 'all you can eat' in particular when nobody speaks English to be able to explain, but they also have menu. The sashimi was very good, the steak was quite poor. If you carefully select or you are lucky it could be very good experience.
