Driving from the Twin Cities to Des Moines, based on TripAdvisor reviews we decided to give this place a try. It is a hike from 35, but worth the drive. The place has lots of seating, and obviously is a localâs hang-out place. Servers are plentiful, prompt, and pleasant. Ordered a burger and a patty melt. Both were good, the sides plentiful.

I say this as a compliment -- this is a really fine middle America meal. Salads, beef dishes, pie and brownies with some stir-fry, pizza, and lighter options for people who are into those new-fangled la-di-da menus. We were a large group, but one waitress handled us all very well and everyone enjoyed the food. Stand-outs -- creme brûlée, brownie and ice cream, filet mignon, blooming onion. Sometimes you just want a good, old-fahioned stick-to-the-ribs meal like the ones they served in the 1950's. Well, here it is.

Short review...good place for hot sandwiches. Hot turkey, breaded tenderloin, six or seven styles of loose meat sandwiches, inventive sides (mac n cheese, home made chips). Nice clean atmosphere, plenty of space for booths and tables. Lots of parking. Close to interstate.Long rant...as a native Iowan who has also traveled extensively, the new owners of the Maid Rite franchise have kept some of the things that made this franchise gather fans over the decades. They have added some things that add value, like ketchup, fries, sides, etc. However, they would do us ALL a favor if they would just get rid of the microwave that I know is hiding back there in the kitchen. No one wants to eat a sandwich that has a microwaved bun. Yes, it's beautiful on the plate, and presents well with the first bite of warm meaty goodness. But.You can taste that it is going to go chewy by the time the sandwich has a couple of bites left. Please, reconsider. For all of us whose memories are long and deep.

I have heard about Pickles for a long time so I decided to take a road trip the and feed the monster called hunger.I ordered the tenderloin sandwich for immediate sustenance. I found it to be a great meal. It would be among one of the top tenderloins I have sampled. The Pizza (everything but onions) was the best ever! I brought it home and the Mrs. and I enjoyed this pizza. It was a winner and worth the trip to experience the food, service, and ambience of Pickles.Place was clean and bright. Lots of electronic signage and plenty of TV's for sports watching.thank you very much for coming in to our establishment
