We made a reservation at Cinque from the US immediately prior to our trip to Greece. My wife and I owned a wine shop in NY for over twenty years, and the description of Cinque on Trip Adviser, rated #4 in Athens, made it sound perfect; a small, owner hands on venue with an extensive, sophisticated Greek wine list and interesting small plates. However, as we had just gotten to Athens the day before, we missed our reservation. After 10 days at Mykonos, Santorini, and Crete, we found ourselves back in Athens for a short stay prior to returning home. On this day we were lost, wandering around in an interesting Athens neighborhood about 45 minutes from our hotel. As I stood in front of a storefront I noticed the small sign; Cinque. We had found the restaurant. The one that we had really wanted to enjoy. However, it was closed. (There are two. One that closes at 6 PM, and one that opens at 6). The door was open and I entered and met Evangelia, who is a co owner with her husband Grigoris. I explained who I was, and apologized about the missed reservation, which she remembered, and she walked us to the other Cinque where we had our original reservation. A twenty minute history lesson of the neighborhood followed as we walked. That is the back story. On to the restaurant. We were handed off to Grigoris who, after the introductions explained the restaurant the wine and food. We sampled many different wines, starting with a white but ultimately with one or two reds. For dinner we chose a charcuterie plate with cheese, olives and bread which was perfect with the wines we selected. We love this place, and hope to return. These folks truly enjoy what they do. Their son has also entered viniculture as he is interested in making wine. Finally, after two hours of sipping and nibbling and chatting with the owners, we bought of a local red which we will enjoy on our anniversary. I told Evangelia this and she was obviously pleased. If you are a wine loving, people person who enjoys meeting local folks while away from home, you absolutely must go there! It is a treasure.Oh yes. The bill for all of this, including a wine for December was 89.00 Euros.Speechless!!How can we thank you enough for this review??My family and I, we feel blessed to receive so much of appreciation and love from the people who are visiting Cinque. And, as you wrote, we do what we love!!Thank you for trying hard to find us!Thank you for trying to speak greek! Well done!Thank you for your kindness!Thank you for celebrating your anniversary with a greek wine! We feel very honored!Efharisto poli!Yamas!

After checking TA reviews we headed to Caravin for our first lunch in Athens. We simply loved everything about the wine bar. The decor, food and wine were faultless. Loved it and we are not the easiest to please. If you like good food and drink then this is the place to head to.
