We've been long time customers of Toyama, including through ownership changes. Its always been strong on food quality and not taking itself too seriously. After visiting last night, I was disappointed with its drop off. Firstly, its quite expensive - expect to pay approximately $30 for a main. When you're eating off old pine tables, that seems a lot.Secondly, the economics of experienced staff make hospitality challenging, but hiring youngsters with no experience and no guidance makes for a frustrating dining experience.Thirdly, its clear the portion sizes have dropped, turning a steak dish into a salad/frozen vegies dish with a side of meat. Its the first time I've had a vegetable/salad combo.Toyama have been great but without some changes we wont be heading back.
I like in Ivanhoe 15 years ago and Popula was a "local" favourite back then. The small premises with Husband and Wife operation only does takeaway. Always fresh and in the best traditional style made and served in full view. Keenly priced and they have not compromised quality to price match with any nearby "chain/franchise" offerings. Although no longer an Ivanhoe resident I know that when passing through I try to make it lunchtime with a stop at Popula.

It was decent, honest, humble, but not wildly delicious. We had the vegetable dumplings, eggplant, rice, tofu, teriyaki salmon. All just passable, but not wonderful. Price for two of us was $60 including one sake. The decor was modest and the service ok. I'm not heading back in a hurry.
