Things to do in Ragusa

We've been three times now, in the last four weeks, each time on a Sunday at lunchtime. It is full, not a single tourist except us (this is Winter), just local families who clearly go there a lot. The restaurant stands out into the sand, with the waves turning right in front of you. Just beautiful. The food is all fish. Good quality. Plentiful. Sicilian. Having been in Sicily for two months now, I am increasingly surprised how all restaurants serve more or less the same thing - there must be a big opportunity for someone to do something different! - and this lovely restaurant follows the same lines. But the quality of the food, atmosphere, welcome, and setting make this a particularly nice place to come. There's a good antipasto for one, or two, with a whole bunch of different fishy things to try on it. Good value. And not all fried, which is good. The tuna with melting onions was amazing, but only available I think as part of the antipasto (I could eat a whole plate of it). The fish ravioli in a rich creamy sauce (with marsala in it perhaps, not sure?) was gorgeous. The seafood risotto makes you smile as it's delivered. Wine is a reasonable price. And the people watching brilliant for visitors. As an almost vegetarian, I would have loved a few more vegetable based dishes, but that is the same across Sicily in Winter. We're going back again before we leave

With much of Ragusa seemingly on holiday, finding anywhere to eat was a challenge, so had one of the few places open to ourselves. Traditional interior, and the place looked extensive. Good range of dishes to suit many tastes, with a pretty extensive wine list, some not cheap mind you. Being lunch time, we settled for just one spaghetti dish each. They were excellently cooked, especially the one with ricci. One of us was persuaded to try a 'dolce' arancino, with I think, a ricotta and rice filling and breadcrumb exterior coated in sugar - it was okay. Well, if Montalbano has eaten here, had to really, albeit not the savoury variety! Service was good and all round, with wine, reasonable value. Some may be put off with their advertising the Montalbano connection, which in some countries will be an incentive to bung up the prices - didn't appear to be so here. Perfectly reasonable.

We vacillated between Carmelo and itâs next door neighbor and just about stumbled into the latter. The electricity went out there and we changed course and went to the white-walled, lights-on, almost empty neighbor, Carmelo (despite its not having any current Trip Advisor reviews and many fewer).Greeted with warmth, walked through the wine list and fish specials/. Ordered the fantastic and succulent sea bass cooked in salt as a main course, the mussels in almond soup and spaghetti with sea urchin. Appetizers were great amazing.Highly recommend.
