Brought up locally but no longer live in the area, was visiting Mum and Dad and got treated to the monthly 2 course buffet which was just brilliant. Home cooked roast beef, ham and pork. Lots of choice of salad etc. Amazing desserts. A true gem of a place and Wilma and Mhairi are the perfect hosts. Over 235 malt whiskies to choose from and a 700 bottle collection.
From the outside this looks like a fairly unassuming establishment. Inside it is a traditional, old fashioned pub set-up, warm and nice and clean. This was our first visit and we were not disappointed. After a study of the fairly extensive menu we ordered a chicken enchilada which came with a selection of fresh veg, cooked to perfection, chips and dry fluffy rice - a substantial helping by anyone's standards. Also ordered was an egg mayonnaise baguette which came fresh from the oven, loaded with egg mayonnaise with finely chopped parsley through it. It was accompanied with a crisp salad and home made coleslaw. This was followed by a shared syrup sponge with custard. We had a soft drink each.Bill total? £17 We probably had a fifteen or twenty minute wait as food was made to order but this was a small price to pay for a very enjoyable and reasonably priced lunch. Apparently this is a very popular venue locally and we would thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet and relaxing lunch.

What a shame this lovely old hotel has such a poor lunch time offering. It's just near the castle, the town centre and parking. It had an inviting chalk board outside & although the A4 papers stuck on every window announcing it was an 'internet cafe' puzzled us, we ventured in.The fare was limited to say the least and when they didn't have ham for a ham sandwich it wasn't too bad as we selected something else. The service was pleasant, but we had to ask at the bar- are you serving food- they seemed surprised to see us & missed a trick by not offering us drinks. When my plain tuna sandwich arrived it was just that- a boring old Brake brothers 'softie', with tuna in- no side salad, garnish, crisps, or all the other stuff you usually get alongside a hotel lunchtime sarnie. The bread roll was bog standard and for some weird reason they served it on a hot plate.A plate of chips ordered on the side to share were the usual frozen bag type- no taste. What a missed opportunity-Tuna, on a seeded/crusty/artisan baked roll, with a little greenery drizzled with mustard vinegar and hand cut twice fried chips would have been so much nicer. My partner's ham sandwich was not available-( surely someone could have nipped across the road and bought a packet of ham)- so she opted for bacon- same boring bread roll- one piece of bacon of the white juice variety- again- crusty decent roll, dry smoked bacon and plenty of it, would have been so much better and more fitting of a hotel lunch time menu, not what we were served which would have graced any lopsided caravan in any amount of lay-bys. (For a proper bacon roll, the best place is the Horn Restaurant half way between Perth & Dundee- now THAT'S a bacon sarnie!)Hope the hotel reads this and ups their game, but.....A short while after we arrived, a hoard of school kids descended- which explained the staple patronage and staple diet of this 'internet' cafe... chips, chips and more tasteless chips- or maybe only virtual food is the main offering. What a shame.
