As a Chicagoan, I like to think that I know pizza--deep dish, thin crust, NY, quattro formaggi, Neapolitan, Sicilian--the list goes on and on. The pizza we shared at Oregano--a symphony of camembert, mozarella, and caramelized onions--was as good as any I've ever had. It was accompanied by a delicious corn salad with grilled avocados, burrata, and basil leaves. Wow!

We went to Mascalzone a bit by chance, as we were walking by. Since it looked like a neighborhood restaurant a bit away from the touristy areas we didn't expect much. The place is simple but clean looking and freshly decorated. After placing my order I went to the bathroom, the ultimate test. To my surprise the men's room was more spacious than usual, it was clean, everything worked, and there was toilet paper, soap, and paper towels. That would all be expected in Europe or North America, but not necessarily in Argentina. Based on that I gave Mascalzone a 10. After returning to my seat I discovered perfectly clean plates and glasses without a single fingerprint. Our waitress was pleasant and the pizzas very tasty. They are thin-crust and as close to Italian pizzas as you can expect so far away from Italy. Definitely a place to keep in mind for a pizza dinner among the Mendocinos.

The guy seating people wanted us to sit outside, because there was seating available there (in a clear tent with heaters). There was only one other person outside. It was a chilly night and we waited for an inside seat, but the wait staff was not happy about that. Once we were seated inside, we wished we had sat outside, because there was a large crowd of noisy posers at the table next to us. The food was better than the service, but the service was lousy, The food was nothing to write home about either. There seemed to be quite a range of people wasting their time and money in this restaurant and I felt sorry for them. When the waiter brought the check, he pointed out that tip was not included. Argentines don't tip, but they know foreigners do. So, you may get used to having it pointed out to you. But this guy's begging was pathetic. Even though they don't customarily get tips from locals, we don't mind tipping if the service and/or food is excellent. Neither were excellent at La Pizza. Nonetheless, we left this guy a buck - but I felt bad about leaving him anything afterwards.Beware, many Argentine restaurants "front-load" their tip by charging a "table service." You may justify this to yourself by saying it is for the bread, but you know bread should be free, so it's really just a tip. Be certain NOT to tip in any restaurant where you have been charged a "table service" - unless you want to prove that you're a foreign sucker.
