I was so pleasantly surprised by Pizzeria Conoforesta. Kurashiki is a fairly small city that's off the beaten track for most Western tourists, so it was a bit of a shock to find a pizzeria that would stand out in American foodie havens like Brooklyn, New York or Portland, Oregon, let alone the far west of Japan. The lunch set, which includes an individually sized thin crust pizza, side salad, drink and gelato, is a great deal. As you can see in my attached photo, the pizza is cooked to crunchy perfection in a wood fired oven that dominates the restaurant's open kitchen.Conoforesta is small, but offers a welcoming indoor seating area, along with a few outdoor tables in a charming courtyard shared with several adjoining shops. Because the entry to Conoforesta is in that courtyard, the restaurant can be difficult to find (I ended up walking through another store to get to the courtyard), but it's absolutely worth the effortâhighly recommended.
Top 10 Japanese food in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, Japan

We had dinner at rentenchi. It is quite convenient to both the station and Bikan on the main dori leading from the station. My wife had pizza and I had gnocchi. While Frommers claimed that the pizza is thick crust, it is not. However, it was wood fired and very tasty. My gnocchi came in alight tomato sauce was both very good, light, and not overwhelming. Our salads both were more than sufficient, and mine with prosciutto was most enjoyable. We would recommend this place (one of our better Italian expriences) to anyone visiting Kurashiki.
Where to eat Asian food in Kurashiki: The Best Restaurants and Bars
You are traveling in Japan and you have been dutifully trying a lot of weird food and you need a break. You know, a good pizza, a great steak a nice salad or even some french fries. We were 10 desperate Americans seeking appetite relief when we wandered into Yaochchi Shouten. Our rumbling stomachs made for loud and disorderly ordering from a wonderful young Japanese waitress that handled the cacophony with grace and a terrific smile. When we discovered the beef dish available was lightly breaded, we needed to change it! we didn't think she understood this subtle English nuance, the language barrier can be menacing to getting exactly what you think you ordered.Momentarily she returned with a separate menu with a picture of the beef exactly as we described our desire. We ordered up.Mountains of delicious fries, with catchup, wonderful margarita pizzas, good pasta and even fried chicken, we finally dug into the mouth-watering tasty beef accompanied with a decent bottle of Margaux. All ten of us rated everything a 10.Go even if you are Japanese and want to try a little soul food from the west.Last anecdote:I got up to pay what was a reasonably priced bill and we were on our way out when the creative waitress singled me across the alley. We walked over to a little 5 seater competitive restaurant where they were grilling up delicious wagyu beef. She explained our steak had come from them Now, that is what I call going the extra mile to make the customer happy. A 10 plus experience.
