The population was 6,226 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Manistee County. The name "Manistee" is from an Ojibwe word first applied to the principal river of the county. The derivation is not certain, but it may be from ministigweyaa, "river with islands at its mouth". Other sources claim that it was an Ojibwe term meaning "spirit of the woods".

Had dinner at this new restaurant in town and it was great! The menu is large and varied. We were a group of six at the height of the dinner hour and our food came out quickly and everything was delicious. Portions are not skimpy! Staff is very friendly and added to the experience. If you like Mexican food you don't want to miss this place!!

Stopped for a family dinner here and had seats right by the window facing the river. We had vegetarian tacos, taco salad, traditional burritos, etc- they serve a nice collection of craft beer and cider as well as fancy margaritas! We were very impressed! Dinner for five with two drinks was $77

This Taco Bell was quite typical of the chain. The tacos were pretty good but no better or worse than those at any other Taco Bell. Same with the prices. Service was friendly and efficient. The location on U.S. 31 makes for fast dining for those traveling on U.S. 31.
