La Malinche

La Malinche offers Mexican and Tex Mex type food. Our expectations were raised by previous reviews but we were disappointed with the experience. The inside looked fun, brightly coloured, but we opted for the cooler tables outside (plastic). The food was hit-and-miss: very nice extra hot chilli sauce (chilli-hot is hard to get in Spain). We had large margaritas which were very refreshing (with crushed ice thickening them) - these tasted lemonade-like but it was hard to discern the alcohol. The guacamole contained more tomatoes than avocado. Fajitas were served with 2 mini quesadillos (odd choice), 6 small tortillas, rice, a decorative miniature serving of chopped tomatoes or possibly guacamole (hard to see any avocado), some quite nice clear greenish liquid of some kind, and (another unusual ingredient) some delicious stewed chorizo (the menu mentioned beans too but we didn't get any). We had a lemon/biscuit dessert which was warm on one side and cold on the other - and oversweet for my tastes, though my partner tucked in readily, For the price, the portions seemed small. Service was fine - indeed a little too fast - main course arrived before we had finished our starter. The restaurant was pretty empty so you probably wouldn't need a reservation.

Mexican food varies and this is a particular version. If you are looking for North American "Tex-Mex", this may not be your favourite. But the food is good and the service was spectacular. I would go back again. There aren't many Mexican places in Extremadura, so it is nice to have this one.

La Lavanderia Street Food

It is a real shame that someone came up with a really cool concept when all innovation around restaurants/food seemed to have been accomplished and then failed so miserably to deliver on it...The only thing that was yum was the prawns, the rest was either totally unremarkable or simply inedible. Best described by some other reviewer as a crazy Asia-Extremadura fusion which SIMPLY.DOES.NOT.WORK. Canned mushrooms in a Caprese salad (not sure how a Caprese salad ended up in the menu of an Asian-Spanish place either!), a teriyaki sauce that would make the Japanese declare war against Spain if they ever tasted it, a ridiculous excess of salt that made 4 out of 7 dishes inedible... We complained and they said "the recipes are supposed to be like that" so no hope that the kitchen staff just had a bad day. The place's decor is super cool but....it's lit like a hospital's operating theatre (which doesn't make it particularly cosy), the tables are far too close together (I was elbowing the chap at the table next to ours every time I moved a finger) and the air-conditioning is absolute rubbish (in Caceres!!!! We had 42 degrees that day). They removed from the bill all the things we complained about, which we told them it wasn't necessary given that it was the way they were supposed to taste like, but they insisted, which was very nice of them. However, there is no chance in the world I would ever set foot in that place again.
