At the base of the rugged, dramatic mountains of Rarotonga lies Avarua, a modest capital boasting a number of bustling outdoor markets, several restaurants and bars, boutiques and the National Museum of the Cook Islands. Along the Main Street you will find fine handicrafts and perfumes, as well as the black pearls for which the area is known. Although conditions are rarely reliable for swimming, there are dive sites in the area, including the famous Wreck of the Matai.
Things to do in Avarua
Stopped in here on a bar crawl around the island for some cocktails. The staff was great and setting was good. They cocktails were fine but compared to others Iâd had on the island they werenât the best. Good place to stop in tho. Iâd go back and try some food and maybe have a beer We've upped the game on cocktails now with $10 standard cocktails (large) and $25 fishbowl cocktails (mega large). Super tasty and potent too!

Set in the heart of Muri village on Rarotonga, La Casita Mexican street café serves a variety of dishes in a vibrant atmosphere. Fresh, authentic flavours, including range of vegetarian options. Fully licensed. Bookings advised.
This is the second visit to this restaurant. Variety of dishes well priced $20.00 for a main. Open air but no air conditioning which is the case with the smaller open restaurants on the island.Worth a visit especially with children has well priced.
Situated literally right on the beach, Wilsonâs Beach Bar & Restaurant is where all the food & cocktail magic happens. With stunning sunsets, themed menus, live music and bonfires on selected nights, thereâs always something to see and do down at Wilsonâs
We ate here three times, just walked up the beach from our rental property (alerted to it by their fire on the beach). Great sunsets to be had, and the chance to watch whales as they pass by (luckily we saw several). We ate nice fish n chips and burgers on Sunday, then on Mexican Wednesday, a rather lovely chicken fajita, alas the nachos were only so-so. The fish bites and fries were great for an afternoon nibble. The cocktails are rather big and didn't rate highly with us, more mixes than alcohol. Wine prices are great though, just $9 for a decent pore.Live music by the guitarist on Mexican night was exceptionally good, well done that guy!Kia Orana,Meitaki Maata for your lovely review. It is great to hear that you enjoyed your time down at Wilson's. We definitely appreciate you taking the time to generate this review for us and look forward to seeing you back again soon.Kia Manuia,The Castaway Crew
