Excellent food and service. This is right next door to Maria Marcadao which usually has live music outside, so you get to hear good BMP and have a more upscale meal. MM has pizza, sushi and brazillian food. A nice inexpensive alternative to Marostica, but if you want good Italian...

In the early parts of the 20th century there was a large immigration of Syrians and Lebanese to South Bahia, particularly Ilheus. The food they brought with them, most famously the quibes, are easy to find. The rest of the cuisine has melted in and is difficult to find. I learned about this restaurant from a book written by Maria Luiza Silva Santos, "O Quibe no Tabuleiro da Baiana," published by the local university press, Editora da UESC. The author describes this restaurant as the best example of the contribution of this immigration to the cuisine of Ilheus and South Bahia. Whether it is authentic I will leave to Ms. Silva Santos. It is certainly delicious and worth a trip. It opens at 6:00 pm or so everyday except Monday. It is open earlier on Sundays. It is on the top level of the family residence so you will have to climb some steps. You should expect to be greeted by Soraya who is the daughter of the founders who were themselves immigrants. It is a few buildings uphill on the street immediately to the left of the Cathedral that runs up the hill behind the cathedral. It is very informal and not expensive. In fact, I think I might just go there for dinner as soon as I am done with this review!
