Salt Bistro in the Cathedral Quarter, Belfast, is somewhere I have passed by a lot and every time I tell myself that I should try it. Indeed my friends keep asking me ‘have you reviewed Salt Bistro yet?’ So Miriam and I visited it last Thursday to see how good this place really was.On entry we were astounded at the use of the space in the restaurant. ‘L-shaped’ and compact, the dining space is beautifully decorated. With high ceilings and blacked-out structural elements it has the feeling of a modern art gallery, the beautiful artwork for sale around the walls also add to how interesting Salt is. We felt so at ease with the surroundings and knew this was going to be great. If the owners put so much invention into their surroundings it follows that they will be as diligent with their food. But they weren’t. The food was next level. Before I go any further, I have to say I have been blessed in the restaurants I have eaten at this year, but Salt has been something special for Miriam and me. And we are already planning our next visit.Sebastian, our host for the evening was diligent and courteous in every way. He settled us in and showed us what was on offer. Salt have great food; they also have some great menu deals, including a great pre-theatre menu, which is splendid, as it is right beside the Mac Theatre. While we decided what to have for starters, we had the moreish house breads with an olive tapenade and a beetroot humous. To sit and peruse the menu, discussing food options and breaking bread with each other is fantastic. We really got into each other’s company over this course, wonderful, I just loved the breads and spreads, it set the atmosphere for the whole evening. Thanks, Sebastian, for the suggestion.I began the evening with a sardine and salad served with homemade bread. What a great starter. The sweet salty sardine was cooked without flaw. Succulent and moist, I can’t remember the last time if ever I have had such a great sardine cooked so simply and yet so exquisitely. I devoured it. Usually I am so careful; of the bone but the sardine flesh just pulled away and melted like butter on the palate. Even now my mouth is watering at the thought of it.Miriam had a shredded duck salad to start with. Tossed in a salad and coated with sesame seeds this dish looked remarkable. Miriam was in awe of this dish, so much so, she disappeared into closed-eyed euphoria, and I dared not ask for a taste. The pork dish of the year is what I had for main. Succulent, moist, salty and completely enthralling was the pork loin wrapped in serrano ham and served with carrots, baby turnips, tender stem broccoli and a red wine jus. It was stunning. At first, I thought the ham may dry out the pork, but the chef was a genius. The pork and ham where so compelling. I couldn’t take my attention away from it. Then I tasted the vegetables and my course was complete. I could’ve drunk the red wine jus, so indulgent and deep were its tastes. Seriously, you guys at Salt deserve a standing ovation.Miriam had steak and chips. This was a Picanha steak. From my limited knowledge this is an Argentinian style cut which is flooded full of flavour. It was faultless. The cooking was executed by a master. The steak was well done, as is Miriam’s flaw, but that set aside, this breath-taking. The chips just snapped, exposing the fluffy white centre.Miriam finished the evening off with an indulgent white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake. It was heavenly, but too sweet for me, Miriam was delighted that I only had one taste and stretched out the reminder making it last.I finished a wonderful evening off with an Italian extravaganza. Affogato Frangelico. I seen this in Rome last year but seen it too late to try. Once I saw it on the menu at Salt my mind was made up immediately. Two scoops of velvety vanilla ice cream served with a shot of expresso and a shot of hazelnut liquor. The Italians know what is what when it comes to desserts, and you know what, so do Salt.Do I recommend Salt? Yes. But not for the run of the mill reasons you may think. Salt is amazing, the food, the staff the setting, but remove one element and you have lost what Salt is. The combination is the reason why we will return. Get down there as soon as you can. Tell them I sent you, you won’t be disappointed.

I had a good breakfast here, poached eggs, sausage and with toast and coffee. Unfortunately there were no clean tables. When the waitress was about to set the tray down I asked her to clean the table, well she cleaned most of it, then looked around at at least 5 other tables that needed cleaning, ignored them and went back to the kitchen. I was there for about half an hour and none of the tables were cleaned. I decided to write this because I see that management actually respond to complaints. I will definitely be back and hopefully this will be resolved.Hi Travellingsilent2019My name is Alan and I am the owner of the Causeway Cafe. We went as a family group to celebrate a birthday. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly. The food was very tasty and highly recommend their steaks. They offer local ales and beers as well as a varied wine list. They are baby friendly too. The restaurant is up a flight of stairs and unsure whether there is a lift etc for people with mobility issues.
