We loved our visit to this gem of a restaurant in Matagalpa. Easily one if the top places to eat in the city. We visited twice with our children, aged 3 and 5, and both times were wonderful experiences. We sampled a number of dishes and everything was top notch. The owners and their daughters hung out and chatted with us for a bit and they really seem to be great people. If we make it back to Matagalpa we will definitely visit them again. We suggest that you do as well...

Gato blanco is a restaurant with a nice atmosphere, with a terrace to enjoy a very interesting international menu of delicious dishes, with a diverse proposal of sea food, nice different desserts or a good coffee from the north of Nicaragua.
This restaurant is easy to find directly across the street from the Sinsa Home Improvement store on no name street (like 99% of every other home or businesses in town). Featuring a quaint outdoor seating area as you arrive and a nondescript small indoor dining room we chose to sit outside which provided us the ability to people watch too. Our server Oscar was very attentive but not annoyingly so. We started with the ceviche and salmon carpachio which were both outstanding even compared to better North American restaurants. For our mains we had salmon and calamari as the New York Stake (that's how it was spelled). Both were served with couscous. The salmon thankfully was not over cooked as it so often is. It was very good. The calamari was ok but kind of drowning in lime juice which reminded me of the ceviche we had just enjoyed. Our whole meal including two Tonas and two Sangrias was about $36 USD. A special shout out to our server Oscar who happily called his friend who has a cab to take us the 3/4 mile back to our hotel for about 66 cents each! Try that in the USA! All in all a memorable dinner in Matagalpa.
