The local Bavarians may complain that the ravioli is home made, that schweiebrat is not on the menu but since when did Bavarians advance the cause of culinary excellence? Alter Wirt offers lovers of traditional local food a chance to eat better to eat healthier and to experience high quality where quality is often lacking. Bravo!We had - the liver - excellent - the Styrian pumpkin seeded chicken - excellent - the Bavarian style schnitzel - excellent - the spinach filled ravioli in brown butter - far superior than anything I have tasted in the land of the Central European hill tribes.If you are staying South East of Munich , or at the Tannerhof, or on your way to Kufstein or Salzburg this restaurant is well worth a visit.

We visited the restaurant a few days before Christmas when spending a winter holiday in the region. The food certainly is delicious and staff friendly. The size of the place is, however, much smaller than it looks on the pictures on their homepage and the wooden dividers between tables don't really keep back the noise from the neighboring tables. We felt a bit claustrophobic almost - but that might have to do with the fact that at our table we were stuck between the wall and a bigger group. Our own party was a group of nine people (half of them teenagers) so we were certainly happy to deal with an certain level of noise. But what we had next to us in the Gasthof zum Wurz was the team of a local company holding their Christmas-do, which included a 25-min loud speech from a guy who had his back side constantly face us in a very inconvenient way, people shouting and cheering so that the atmosphere for us was more that of a rugby stadium than that of a restaurant. Certainly not what we expected when visiting a restaurant whose prices are on the expensive side. When (after 15min !) asked whether he could please move to the other side of their table to give us a break, the guy simply refused and continued in a loud noise, also including abusive language towards our group. After 20 min we asked restaurant staff for help but only received a friendly "What can we do - they are having their Christmas-do?". So in general: the restaurant and the food is certainly worth a visit - but check who is there with you as you will sit very close to everyone else in the restaurant. And avoid busy seasons like before Christmas!

This wonderful new restaurant is in the old Wendelstein Hotel building in the center of Bayrischzell. The new owners have renovated the restaurant area and expect the hotel guest room renovation to be finished and ready for occupancy by the end of 2016. There is a beer garden for outdoor dining and drinking when the weather cooperates. My partner and I have dined at the Alpenwirt a number of times since their opening and keep coming back for more. We especially like the diversity of the menu which features Bavarian favorites prepared with local ingredients. There is something for every taste including vegetarian and children's dishes. There is also an extensive beer, schnapps, and wine list . And there is also a variety of non-alcoholic beverages. We like the traditional Bavarian favorites Wiener Schnitzel, Almschnitzel, Schweinefilet and the wonderful Kaiserschmarrn. However, my favorite item on the Alpenwirt´s menu is the Almburger. This burger must be eaten with two hands and is served on a bun loaded with bacon, roasted onions, lettuce, tomato and pickles served with handmade french fries. Stop by and have a burger or one of their other tasty dishes. You will not be disappointed!
