The Agriturismo Piccapane is situated just outside Cutrofiano, a little town in the heart of the "real" Salento. I booked myself a room for one month, not having realised that it served mainly vegan food. My initial reaction of culinary horror soon turned to admiration as soon as I became used to eating this style of food. The variety of tastes was a real surprise - and absolutely EVERTHING is grown on the land surrounding the house. I slept soundly all night long - for the first time in decades. No streetlights - so the sky was clear and starry. The room was very Spartan and had no TV. What a surprisingly positive experience. It was genuine treat not to have to watch a screen at all for four weeks. The nicest part of all was being in contact with the staff - most of whom work on the land. Italians at their most hospitable and friendly! The 'boss' Giuseppe has devoted his time and money to creating a unique, pollution free environment. All credit to him. Even the wine was biological, contained NO sulphites - and tasted just like real wine should taste. (Red only - but other drinks, including local ale, can be purchased. An unforgettable experience and one to be recommended! Technically, I was there for a purpose - to launch a novel I had written - but my overriding sensation was one of simple pleasure. My B & B lady told me about Dolce Salute. I was lucky to get a gluten free pastry for breakfast each morning- delicious. We visited and stocked up with goodies prior to leaving Galatina. I wish there was a shop like this in Sydney, Australia!
