Our first opportunity to eat out in Manta Rota was on Thursday 30th May - by coincidence Restaurant Essencia na Praia just opened its doors for the first time that day! It was formerly in Cacela but transfered to the premises previousl operated b'Sem Espinas'.What a beautiful romantic setting overlooking the dunes. Comfortable chairs and options of eating inside or outside. Essencia is a real winner! We were bowled over by the warm welcome (we were served by Denise who is a great asset to the restaurant), we were also more than amazed by the food. We both had the gazpacho which was outstanding. I had the vegetable curry and my wife had sea-bass. We had a bottle of rose and a couple of sambuccas. This may be the new kid on the block but it seems poised to become the most popular restaurant in Mant Rota...it certainly deserves to be.We returned twice and I can vouch for the quality of the musroom risotto. My wife had tuna one night and spagetti bolognese another night. The side orders of rosti, sweet potatoes and potato au gratin all lived up to expectations. Each evening we finished our meal with the fresh fruit option because nothing compares to sun-ripened fruit. We couldn't fault the food. They have a pretty comprehensive menu and some very interesting starters. This restaurant alone would encourage us to return to Manta Rota!

The Xicken PiriPiri's concept is based on simplicity and on fish and meat specials, grilled over charcoal. These specials are made with the best quality chosen products, unique and homemade sauces, that give them the desired flavor. They stand out for the
During our 2 weeks stay in the area, we ate here 3 times! Twice for lunch & once for dinner. Lunch we had very tasty chicken/salad/'crisps' & washed down with lovely vinho verde. Dinner we tried the leitao (suckling pig) - this was amazingly tasty, perfect crackling!! Each time we finished with the best rice pudding ever!! They also have orawns & fish on the menu for those who do not partake in meat. If you have time before/after - take a little walk to the shop to the right - an Aladdin's cave of portuguese pottery.

The menu contains a number of meat, poultry and fish dishes sure to please any palate. I was looking for the more traditional Portuguese fare, and was lucky to find Feijoada Transmontana (a bean/cabbage/potato/sausage/pork dish) at lunchtime. It was excellent. Service was great and the price was right. It's a small place with only six tables (4 inside and 2 outside). I would definitely recommend O Farnel to anyone.
