I was at the hotel for a stop over and decided to try the bar/restaurant. Good food! They were out of the lamb chops, but my grilled chicken thigh main was excellent. The service can be spotty/forgetful, but the prices are reasonable and the wine was excellent.Dear Donald H,Thank you for sharing your dining experience with us! The Nomads Chain of Restaurants dominates the restaurant industry in Mongolia, with forays beyond traditional Mongolian fare and branching out into bars, pubs and outlets offering international fare. Great efforts are made in their businesses to promote the Nomads brand, with restaurants in all of Mongolia's urban centers. It's an aggressive strategy that seems to be paying off.Despite its culturally specific name, Khaan Ger may offer the most international variety of all the Nomads restaurants. The restaurant features contemporary interiors with strong nods to traditional design and imagery, and of course, plenty of Nomads branding. We went in during the lunch hour and found a restaurant filled with primarily local business diners. On weekdays, Khaan Ger offers a "Business Lunch" special of a small salad, soup and entree item for 9,900 MNT. A different combination is offered every weekday, and management says that they will be rotating the specials on a more regular basis. The serving sizes are modest, but for a fast, healthy lunch with some variety, it's ideal for its target market. Despite the bargain, many diners that afternoon were ordering full sized items off the regular menu. They also offer an all-you-can-eat buffet brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, which provides an excellent opportunity to sample the diversity and quality of what they have to offer. The menu in English and Mongolian offers an overwhelmingly wide range of cuisines, from Thai classics to British favorites, and of course a page of Mongolian classics. The international variety is consistent across the entire menu, which includes salads, soups, entrees, grill items, and set menus for groups of 3 or more. One benefit of the global offerings is that Khaan Ger ends up having one of the most eclectic vegetarian friendly selections under one roof. Restaurants attempting international fare can sometimes suffer from culinary multiple personality disorder. None of the personalities ever truly dominates, and their unique identities can sometimes clash. Khaan Ger makes concerted efforts to avoid this by generally focusing on locally sourced ingredients, not ranging from dishes terribly unfamiliar to UB diners, and holding on to its international chefs. The least successful dish that we sampled was the Thai Shrimp Salad, which missed the mark on replicating fresh herbal Thai flavors and heat. The Beef Wellington at Khaan Ger is a popular menu item, and a rare find in the city. The pastry is nicely layered, and some bacon is added to the filling, but unless requested upon ordering, the beef tenderloin may arrive a bit past medium rare. It's a tricky dish, but overall well executed. The current star of the menu is the Russian classic salmon koulibiac, another pastry wrapped dish. The salmon is cooked perfectly, and the Khaan Ger version adds French accents of Bechamel, spinach and a perfectly cooked egg. On texture, flavor and delicacy, the dish hits some terrific marks. Khaan Ger is known to be busy with busloads of tourists during the summer, but while we have the city to ourselves this winter, it's worth checking out. This diner would recommend sticking to the dishes that seem most likely to succeed with the ingredients readily available to enjoy the professional execution of dishes by a disciplined kitchen.
