Reviews on Grill food in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, South Africa. Oudtshoorn, the "ostrich capital of the world", is a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa, located between the Swartberg mountains to the north and the Outeniqua Mountains to the south. Two ostrich-feather booms, during 1865-1870 and 1900-1914, truly established the settlement. With approximately 60,000 inhabitants, it is the largest town in the Little Karoo region. The town's economy is primarily reliant on the ostrich farming and tourism industries. Oudtshoorn is home to the world's largest ostrich population, with a number of specialized ostrich breeding farms, such as the Safari Show Farm and the Highgate Ostrich Show Farm.

You normally order your food from an extensive menu of a variety of ostrich dishes and then go on your tour of the ostrich farm which we did and I wrote an extensive review on the farm which was very interesting. You then come back around 60-90 mins later and eat your food. Off the beaten track and tucked away in the Swartberg Country Manor we were pleasantly surprised by the homely fare provided by the chefs and staff of the Patat Restaurant.Their 3 course evening meal proved to pay testimony to their website blurb - "catering to every palate and occasion, we strive to offer sumptuous cuisine that has been finely prepared with precision and passion, utilizing fresh, local ingredients. Whether you're a food enthusiast, or simply want to sample South African flavours, we believe you'll be impressed with our seasonally styled offerings".Impressed we certainly were! Our meal began with a starter of beetroot & orange salad with toasted nuts and balsamic glaze, followed by mains of grilled ostrich fillet served with fondant potatoes, red wine jus and garden greens and Karoo lamb shank with garlic mashed potatoes, minted peas and honey glazed carrots, and concluded with a dessert of vanilla panna cotta with poached pears and ginger snap crumb. Wow!
