Excellent cider house in Ascain. I really love the concept, you buy a platter of pintxos (Basque tapas), and then you can drink as much cider as you want (customers are called to the barrel with a cry of txotx). Simple honest local fare that is reasonable and nice. The staff was very friendly when we asked for directions so we came back for lunch. The veal mince stew was hearty but the local sausages with fries was tops. Especially the hand cut fries which was cooked to perfection. They were not overdone like some or limp and oily but just beautifully crisp golden brown with enough salt to just make you go . . . Wow! And this was after we've just come from San Sebastián!

If you like Basque cider, grilled sardines, jambon de Serrano, or moules and gateaux basque with cherries then this the place for youWe turned up about one and there was a small queue as the waitress took the orders and people paid you find a table sit down and a waitress will deal with youI have eaten jambon de Serrano from the supermarkets but this was in a different league direct from the producer locally to the restaurant, then the moules on the own beautiful (the last time I had moules they were so salty they were almost inedible, whereas these were served just right. Then came the gateaux Basque with a cherry filling looked dry but it wasn't it was just melt in the mouth. We had Basque cider (50cl / 1/2 litre) and coffee and the total bill was 38.50⬠well worth it and we will try to go back and try some of the other dishes i.e. tuna steaks
