Reviews on Gastropub food in Porto, Northern Portugal, Portugal. The town that gave the country (and port wine) its very name, Porto is Portugal’s second-largest metropolis after Lisbon. Sometimes called Oporto, it's an age-old city that has one foot firmly in the industrial present. The old town, centered at Ribeira, was built on the hills overlooking the Douro River, and today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 14th-century São Francisco church is a main attraction, as are the local port wine cellars, mostly located across the river at Vila Nova de Gaia.

If youâre in Porto make sure to book RUA. Itâs a small wine / tapas bar 10 minutes walk from the centre (eg from Praca da liberdade near San Bento station) that has live music. The food and wine and beer are all good and the music is brilliant - great acoustics and vibe without being deafening so you can still chat if you want to. The staff could not be nicer or more professional (even though they spent a lot of time turning people away as the bar is small and the place is understandably very popular). Youâve been warned!

Missing some hearty beers? Go here. What a selection! The food menu is very different. I had quesadilla and it was delicious! He had a sandwich that was really something. Some interesting choices. We shared a port and desert and I could have come back and tried other items. Quirky. And great. Make a reservation.

A couple of days ago, my wife and I booked a table at Taberna Real do Fado, a very cosy restaurant in the heart of Porto. Just like most other guests, we arrived at eight, when the restaurant was opening. We were welcomed very friendly and got the menu. As my wife is a vegetarian, the restaurant offered her a great pasta and 2 out of 4 starters on the menu where also vegetarian dishes. After the starters, the waiter/owner went to the middle of the restaurant, where two guys where playing classic and Portuguese guitars and started singing with an incredible voice. They had three singers who were taking turns after every dish.In the end we left the restaurant around twelve and we had a great evening, with good food, wine and great fado performances between the courses.
