Our guide recommended this lovely restaurant for dinner and it was fantastic. The four of us each had a different dish; roast lamb w/potatoes and asparagus/leeks, chicken breast on carrot salad with raisins and pumpkin seeds, duck confit with potatoes, barracuda with ratatouille. All were delicious and well seasoned! The salad course was a melange of lettuce with figs, nuts, cheese, persimmon lightly dressed. The country bread was fresh and warm served with olive oil or butter. The wine was very good too. Our dinner for the four of us with several glasses of wine came to just under $50US per person. The restaurant is charming and feels like a French bistro in Japan. By far the very best western type food we had in over two weeks in Japan. Very friendly and personable staff eager to help translate menu to English. They were very patient and hospitable. We loved everything - the atmosphere, decor, background music, staff including owner/chef and of course the food. A delightful surprise and perfect ending dinner for our last night in Japan. Arigato!

We (three gourmands) visited early June, and it’s time to finally share this outstanding experience with you, who don’t speak or understand Japanese. The visit was part of a long awaited, extended, Japan trip and an absolute highlight. We went to Kanazawa out of simple curiosity, to see what’s on the other side of this big island of Honshu, and also to visit one of the most beautiful gardens in Japan. Close brackets :-).So, we searched for the great restaurant with one Michelin star on site and found it. As it’s very small you should reserve timely. We did this with the help of the hotel, as their website is Japanese only and trying to call them by phone was an endeavour to itself …. But I talked to the very kind Chef personally in French only (he doesn’t really speak or understand much English, yet we managed to set a date for dinner some weeks in advance). This is also supposed to show you that you’ll get a very refined, special and genuine French-Japanese experience. Some words about the Chef: he trained in France for nearly two years and returned to Kanazawa to develop a nouvelle cuisine “japonaise à la francaise” with typical local ingredients combined with meticulous Japanese perfection into edible, spectacular, and unique works of art. The accompanying wine list is great, too; in fact, Mr. Hirokazu Makino chooses to pick the splendid wines himself during occasional trips to France, the last one this past summer.Upon arrival at this small, elegant and discreet location on the banks of the River Sai we were greeted by very welcoming, English speaking staff; the Chef himself smiled from the glassed-in kitchen and came over to greet us personally some moments later. We opted for Champagne accompanied by beautiful amuse-bouche and went for the exquisite menu (to be enjoyed by all guests that evening) consisting of some 9 courses, each prepared with care, love, and outstanding culinary prowess. Remarkable personal touch: the menu was individually written on a delicate rice paper card and addressed with the first name of every guest to be taken home as a filigree memory. The whole evening (about 3h) passed by like a beautiful dream, leaving us wondering how such spectacular dishes can be created from common yet first class local ingredients. Chef Makino and his discreet, very friendly and highly professional staff combine the Ishikawa province delights and produce (both for dining and in creating the special surroundings and elegant details within the restaurant) with profound guest awareness and a highly developed sense for gourmet art thus creating unforgettable memories and the desire to return to Kanazawa. If looking for a special experience in this beautiful, inviting, city a dinner at Makino’s hidden gem is an absolute must.

This was one of the restaurants I enjoyed the most whilst in Japan. Immaculate service, lovely surroundings, fabulous food. I love Japanese cuisine, especially that you find in the Kanazawa area but I felt I wanted some French after a while and I was not disappointed. If I am back in the region I'll certainly go again.
