The rural hinterland is used mainly for dairy farming. The town's population as of 2016 was 4,592. The town is a tourism hub in West Cork, and was recognised as the "Best Town in Europe" in 2017, and "Best Place of the Year" in 2017 by the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland. Clonakilty is in the Cork South–West (Dáil Éireann) constituency, which has five seats.

Family dinner so we ordered and pizza soon arrived. Delicious and everyone was very happy. Real meats used which is how it should be versus the dominoes etc processed meats. Been twice for breakfast, really nice full Irish, quick service with nice seating arrangement upstairs. Sausages have a nice flavour to them, rashers, fried egg etc all really tasty. Can be a lot harder then you think finding somewhere that serves a traditional full Irish, O'Flynns does the job. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for a decent brekkie in the city centre.
