Elk Grove Village is a village located in northeastern Illinois adjacent to O'Hare International Airport and is a near northwest suburb, touching the city of Chicago. It is one of the Chicago metropolitan area's principal villages due to its large industrial park, located on the eastern border of the village. The village is located primarily in Cook County with a small portion in DuPage County. The population was 33,127 at the 2010 census. As the name suggests, Elk Grove Village is home to a small herd of elk kept in a grove at the eastern edge of the Busse Woods forest preserve for which the grove is named. Elk are not native to the area but were brought by train from Montana by an early resident, William Busse, in the 1920s. The elk are currently maintained by the Chicago Zoological Society veterinary staff and the Busse Woods Forest Preserve wildlife biologists.

I made it there about 1 hour before closing and was amazed at the number of people that were coming in for takeaway orders. I tried several different pierogi, spinach,sweet cheese, meat, potato cheddar bacon. I loved the potato and spinach, I personally wouldn't do the sweet cheese or meat again. I will say my only history with pierogi before are ones from the freezer section of the grocery store, so I may be partial to potato pierogis. If I was in the area again I would come back and try their other offerings.

This is a small owner operated cafe with authentic polish dishes. My wife and I shared pierogis, polish sausage, and zapiekanka which is a large,mushroom and cheese sort of sandwich, served open faced and toasted. All delicious! Try her home made compote beverage as well. You will love the prices (6 pierogies $4.49). This is the kind of spot we all hope to find; a welcome alternative to a world too full of franchise restaurants.

U Gazdy Polish Restaurant offers an authentic polish dining experience with good food and good service. We had the Highlander Dinner that had Pork sirloin escallops baked in smoked cheese cover with a mushroom sauce, lamb served with hunterâs sauce, stuffed cabbage in a mushroom sauce, potato pancakes, gypsy style fries and grilled vegetables. Everything tasted great.
