Star of the West Pub and Restaurant, Kimberley's oldest Pub, lies within sight of the city's famous Big Hole.

We popped in for a couple of drinks after visiting the big hole - the very hospitable manager took time to explain a little of the history behind the bar which is, he reckoned, the third oldest still operating in South Africa (ca. 1870 at the height of the diamond digging when it is said Cecil Rhodes enjoyed a tipple here).The original bar and fittings are still being used, but the upstairs brothel is no longer in operation. Would still recommend a visit!

The Horeshoe Inn has always been well known for the good quality food they served, and going there tonight I didnât expect anything else.I did however leave feeling rather dissapointed, a few reasons...- The menus look like they went to war, falling apart...- Our table ordered a steak, medium, it was well done.- Another meal was ordered with veggies. It arrived with chips and the waiter immediately noticed and offered to correct the order before we even said anything. It came as a massive suprise though when she brought a side plate and started to take the chips from the plate. It makes me wonder, who will be getting this chips??- I ordered a snack basket. The onion rings where not fresh, got the idea it was warmed from frozen after being cooked. Nothing spectacular on my plate.- The burgers on the table looked quite good.All in all I think this is more for a few guys looking for a bar, not quite a restaurant for you, your friend and your wives.

I popped in for lunch between meetings on a trip.The name made me think they were an artisanal restaurant which they are not. It is a very unique restaurant in that they make 3 meals a day. A breakfast, lunch and a dinner. I had the choice between curry mince and steak strips. The waitress suggested the curry mince and rice which I ordered. The food was by no means fancy. It was good hearty home cooking and a nice big portion size served on rice. It was tasty but not hot.I would have liked more choice and probably would have gone elsewhere had I known they only do the 2 options (the options change daily). Having said that the meal I got was tasty and filling and it was served with a side salad.While the lack of choice was a let down, they make up for it in price. It must be the best value for money I've had in ages. The entire meal was 40 bucks. I can't remember having a sit down lunch for R40 bucks in years. If its value for money you seek look no further. If you are looking for something a little more elaborate and gourmet you might want to go elsewhere.
