Turangi is a small town on the west bank of the Tongariro River, 50 kilometres south-west of Taupo on the North Island Volcanic Plateau of New Zealand. It was built to accommodate the workers associated with the Tongariro hydro-electric power development project and their families. The town was designed to remain as a small servicing centre for the exotic forest plantations south of Lake Taupo and for tourists. It is well known for its trout fishing and calls itself "The trout fishing capital of the world". The major Māori hapu (tribe) of the Turangi area is Ngati Turangitukua.

I think some of the reviews of this place are kinda harsh. Let's get the weird bit out of the way first: The restaurant is in a partitioned-off part of the takeaway shop and the girl basically takes your order, reappears ten minutes later with your food, tells you to come next door to pay when you're finished, and then b*ggers off and leaves you to it. So yeah, service is on the minimal side. But let's face it, you don't go to a Chinese takeaway in a one horse town in the middle of nowhere expecting haute cuisine and silver service. We had average Chinese meals at an average price here, and I've got to say I've been served much worse food that cost much more, in much bigger cities.

Chinese food in the middle of nowhere ... you can't expect exquisite dim sum. It was a random setting, plain interior with a few tables. The waitress was kind and helpful when she was in the room, spent most of the time outside ... I wonder if she was also the chef! The food wasn't good but after a 17km walk that day anything would do. The spring rolls are giant!
