La Brasa

Reviewed By Dale O

In the neighborhood where I was having vehicle service, La Brasa was warmly recommended by the service representative at the shop desk. This is an industrial area: to my knowledge, this is one of two eating places available to the general public. The establishment was 2/3 full about 12:40pm. Quick service, orders, delivery: 3 waiters were present for about a dozen tables. I had 1/4 chicken with mixed vegetables and black beans, with soda, for less than $10, plus tip. Chicken was quickly served with two Peruvian sauces on the side, warm; with broccoli and carrots, warm; and black beans (very warm). The sides were served without seasoning - excellent texture. Prices at the low-end of "mid-range"Although I had lunch, a number of dinner entrees were also available. Settings were plain, cozy, and comfortable. Dine within, or take out. Both the restaurant and the available restroom were clean.

El Mariachi

Family outing. Some of us had been here before. For us, our first visit. And my spouse isn’t wild about Tex-Mex. But what a pleasant surprise. An extensive menu with dinners running between $15. and $25. The scallops, shrimp and lobster dinners are recommended. Two of our party ( including my spouse ) had the steak carne and both enjoyed it. I ordered the chicken chimichanga with rice and beans, onions, sour cream and guacamole. Lots of chicken stuffed into a wrap. It was excellent and so big I couldn’t finish it. Others in our party had other dinners. Each was brought out hot from the oven and each was presented attractively. In all dinner for six ran about $165 for a group of six. And we would certainly return.

Paladar Rockville

Paladar means palate, or "taste" and it's the right moniker for a place that offers small shareable plates, fresh ingredients, and happy hour pricing with free parking in the heart of trendy Rockville. Our large group was set up in a large front room with plenty of room to mingle that the organizers had requested ahead of time. The service was pretty good, as it was difficult to track drinks as various people trickled in. The food orders and drinks were served quickly and the bill was lower than expected for so many plates on the table. I ordered the chicken empanadas, and they were quite good-- the trio was maybe not as crispy as I would have liked, but that was probably my fault because we were 15 ladies chatting. After happy hour timed out at 7pm, we did not see our server as much. This cluster of restaurants around Whole Foods is not the Rockville Pike I remember from my teenage years working at the nearby defunct White Flint mall. But then again, we did not call Rockville Pike "North Bethesda" then! There is outdoor seating which I would like to try on a return visit. Next time, I will be trying a rum flight.
