Went to this restaurant on a recommendation from our daughter who had been once before. We went on a Saturday at about 5.30pm and to be honest the restaurant looked empty but they said they had one or two tables free. I would recommend booking as all the tables were full when we were leaving! All three of us had the Patties for starters, Curried Mutton x 2 and Calypso Jerk Chicken (all served with Rice n' Peas and Dumplings) for mains and Sticky Toffee Pudding x 2 for dessert. The total bill came to about £70.00 including 4 Red Stripes and 2 Cocktails!Overall I was impressed with the service, quality, portion size and price. Would return in the future and recommend. I only thing I would say was that the outside areas could do with a tidy and maybe brightening up.

Lively restaurant inspired by Caribbean beach shacks and street hawkers, with a jerk pit barbecue.
We were staying overnight at the Premier Inn next door as we were due to attend a show at King George's Hall. The show started at 8pm but we hadn't eaten much that day and so we went to Turtle Bay at 6pm thinking that we could have have a leisurely meal and still have time to stroll to the venue. As we hadn't booked a table we weren't surprised to be told by the very efficient and personable "front of house" (sorry, I don't know if he was the Manager or not) that we would have to wait about 20 minutes for a table. We waited in the bar area after being served by the, again, very friendly and welcoming bar staff. After only about 15 minutes, Mr Front of House told us that a table was available and we duly followed him to be seated. The menu had many interesting-sounding meals which piqued our interest but my wife opted for the curried aubergine, only to be told that the restaurant had run out of aubergines. She was a little disappointed but accepted that aubergines can go bad quickly so it was understandable that restaurant would not keep a large stock. We both then opted for the curried goat hash, mainly because it had the interesting-sounding ingredient of "crispy fried eggs". I also ordered a side of Caribbean dumplings as I enjoy English and Chinese dumplings. After a wait of 35-40 minutes, a very apologetic waitress came to our table to inform us that kitchen had run out of eggs!!! A restaurant running out of eggs by 7pm is something that we couldn't get our heads around. We were told that we could have the meal without eggs or could choose something else (which suggested to us that the meal hadn't even begun to be prepared yet). As we were now getting nervous of the time, we said that we would have the meal without eggs but asked that we be given some priority as we had a show to go to. The very nice waitress assured us we would have the meal ASAP. Mr Front of House also apologised and offered and extra side dish free of charge. When it arrived, we both found the meal underwhelming. Goat meat can be chewy but this was painful on the teeth and had large quantities of gristle in it. Without the eggs it was basically now a spicy vegetable hash. The dumplings were also a disappointment, my wife declaring that they were basically bread, rather than dumplings. We weren't offered a dessert menu but I doubt we would have risked having a dessert given the time we had to wait for the main course (we didn't have a starter) and the fact that we had to get to the venue. Mr Front of House kindly gave us a discount on the meal bill but it won't tempt us to re-visit and we were sorry that we didn't just have the evening meal in the Premier Inn. I would have given this restaurant an even lower rating if it hadn't been for the staff.Hi there,Thank you for taking the time to review us. First and foremost, thank you for your kind words in regards to our service. Where to eat Contemporary food in Darwen: The Best Restaurants and Bars
Sista Calypso serving authentic Caribbean food. Jerk chicken. Curried goat/mutton. Also new for Darwen the mighty reggae box. Eat in or takeaway.
I love this place. Yes, it looks a little like a greasy spoon, but that's definitely part of the charm. This is definitely a cafe, not a restaurant. The food is uncompromisingly good and pretty well authentic. Nothing I've had here isn't good. I'm seriously in love with the coconutty coleslaw and the big, thick Jamacian dumplings they do here. One thing to note, the Reggae box they offer is ridiculously huge. Me and a friend got one as a take away, and we had to call someone else to come over to help us finish it (and none of use are small eaters). It's definitely one of my go-to places in town, for lunch or even as a stop on a night out.
