Speyer (German pronunciation: [ˈʃpaɪ̯ɐ], older spelling Speier, known as Spire in French and formerly as Spires in English) is a town in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, with approximately 50,000 inhabitants. Located beside the river Rhine, Speyer is 25 km (16 miles) south of Ludwigshafen and Mannheim. Founded by the Romans, it is one of Germany's oldest cities. Speyer is dominated by the Speyer Cathedral, a number of churches and the Altpörtel (old gate). In the cathedral, beneath the high altar, are the tombs of eight Holy Roman emperors and German kings.

We walked through the pedestrian zone and wanted something more than cake, ice cream or a croissant for breakfast. About 100m south of the Dom we found this cafe. Great breakfast options for a real breakfast! We actually opted for the 'bread' items and they were a real breakfast. I got the scrambled eggs on bread. Very large slice of bread spread with herbed cream cheese and a mountain of well done scrambled eggs.We had a great sunny October morning so we sat outside. Very nice patio and the inside looks really good too.My wife got the Camembert Cheese bread with pear. The pear slices were the perfect touch and the amount of cheese! Wow. Cappuccinos were very good too.

Very popular restaurant for lunch Friendly welcoming staff, good choice of menu.Chose the goats cheese strawberry walnut salad it was delicious. Especially with a glass of Pinot Grigio wine.Lovely selection of delicacies to take home as well. Would certainly recommend it if you can get a parking space.

What makes the Maximilian different fro mother European cafes is the extensive Schnitzel menu... Appart from your usual cafe burger, pasta and sandwiches the Maximilian has a menu of at least ten different schnizels. Furthermore, the cafe offers a daily lunch special that is served within ten minutes.
